There are a lot of crappy AS out there. Take a look at the tests in Tirerack and you can see how differently they perform. Like any tires, you still gotta shop for the right one. I'm annoyed because the one I want has been back-ordered since February.

I think that's kinda the point of us going off-topic here. Rex's car is AWD, so there really isn't a need to double your tire budget and get winter tires. Yes but Im also making the distinction that relatively speaking AWD still sucks compared to a true 4WD vehicle. I get it if you want to have marginal increases, and "suck less" while in your AWD car you might get some snow tires, but they'd have to be really damn cheap or free to even justify putting them on/taking them off

Do winter tires cost that much more than AS? I wasn't talking about buying studded tires, just a nice set of Blizzaks.
If you're going to go through the trouble of owning more than one set of wheels / tires there's no sense in cheaping out on something that could save you from someone else plowing into you because you didn't have enough traction to get out of the way.

They're about the same. The savings comes from not having to maintain a set of summer tires as well.
Now if you want summer tires for something specific, like track events, then the point is moot.

My thinking here is that I would not have to compromise. Winter tires from Nov-March, then when it gets reliably above freezing go to a dedicated summer tires. *Since I am getting new wheels anyway* there is (in my mind) no good reason not to take the stock (skinny) WRX wheels and put snow tires on them. They can live under my porch through the summer, and then I'll have the ultimate winter setup also, even if I don't need it.
Honestly though, this is a pretty valuable discussion. Someone should make a thread in GD.

If you don't care about summer performance and are ok with arguably adequate traction in the winter, then I could see why buying a nice set of AS's makes sense.

I had all seasons on the stock WRX wheels this winter and they are plenty. I still made it through around 12 inches of it this past winter with a lowered car. The tires aren't really what holds it back, it's the ground clearance. I had plenty of traction with the ASs but when the snow gets deep enough it just piles up in front of the car and basically lifts it off the ground and you get no traction. Snow tires won't really help this problem at all.

The Good:
Seats are comfy, even with 116k of somebody else's farts.
My duct tape is still holding out the water from my sunroof. Can't complain about that!
Thanks to my beautiful wife and Meguiars Odor Eliminator, my care doesn't smell like a wet dog anymore.
NO PROBLEMS.
It warms up faster than my Mazda did, meaning I'm toasty warm by the time my 2 mile commute is done.
The Meh:
The power. It's sufficient, but it doesn't have the freight train put your ass in the seat torque of the Mazda. Whatev, I'll fix it. I have the techmology.
The fuel economy. 100% puttering around town got me 20mpg last tank. Better than a Camaro, I guess.
The Bad:
My fender is still fucked up, and I can't find anyone who doesn't want ONE MILLION DOLLARS (.pinky) for a pair of fenders. I've given up trying to find an unmolested SRP wagon fender. Might as well look for the holy grail.
My windshield washers are all fucked up. The passenger side washes my roof, the driver's side washes underneath my wipers. wtf.
There was water in my passenger rear floor. Two possibilities: One: AC drain is either clogged or came in from the firewall. B: The Damprid I put in there spilled all over that area of the floor and I, like an idiot, said "Eh, I'll clean it up later." Damprid is just calcium chloride, which dissolves in water, so my theory is that it did its job, collected all the moisture to that area, then condensed it and dissolved, leaving behind moisture. I say this because the wetness in the carpet was VERY 'salty', and unless someone pissed in my car, I don't think that my AC would have made salty water there. I dried it up, and I'm waiting to see if it gets wet again.
I have an exhaust rattle. I've come to understand that's just "WRX Character" so I'm trying to embrace my rattle.
It's dirty, because I am lazy.
So what do you guys say? Should I just leave my fender busted? Put a giant vinyl band-aid on it? Or should I try a little harder to get it replaced?

Our passenger side front fender has been busted for ~5 years. I'll fix it when it comes time to sell the car, but not a minute sooner.

i don't think it looks totally out of place to have a busted fender on a subaru. they're scrappy.
99% chance the rattle is the heat shielding on the header/cat. it's just a bunch of tin oragami wrapped around there and collects gravel and eventually loosens and bangs around. i don't think it will harm anything to tear it off next time you're under there.

People want like 200 bucks for a pair of sedan fenders that are almost always WRB. I literally cannot find ANY SRP body parts, which is fine, but I'm not paying more than 50 dollars for a wagon fender that isn't SRP or 100 dollars for a pair of sedan fenders that aren't SRP.
It's a little unsightly, I might try to "bang it out" a little and see if it looks better. I dunno. I thought I could buy a, you know, "OEM Replacement" fender for like 100 bucks on ebay or whatever, but no dice. (Apparently you can get the splash shields until the cows come home.)
Somebody (Jeff?) want to check over at hillside and see if they have any bugeye imprezas?
