major lesson learned... always take before pics or label exactly what parts you remove!

I haven't been checking this thread like a I should. This is something I learned quite early in my projects. Its gotten to the point now where I have buckets. The starter bucket (5 starters), the Alternator/bracket bucket, the waterpump and attaching bolts bucket, the PS pump bucket. You get my point. After having 6 TDs and having parted or otherwise toredown 5 of them I have it down to a science. Its time to get one running. If I can get Nick out of sick-bed this weekend he and I are going up to get this engine sent off to get cleaned. We are gonna blue-print it ourselves then send it and the head off for a cleaning and maybe a bore out. If you need any help with this I would be down for a roadtrip.

oh awesome! I'm definately going to need someone with an engine lift and possibly a truck to help pull the engine from the parts car and move it around to the other side of the barn the car is in to store it. I'll let you know more once we're ready.

Update from the past 2 weekends:

Got my friend Eric's car back from Lynchburg. We finished the T-belt and the new brakes (carbotech pads, rotors, SS lines, super blue fluid. Now all 3 E30's are in Richmond at my parents place. I also fixed my passenger window by replacing the window regulator motor and did some other small stuff. new pics are up:

well spent this past weekend replaceing my timing belt on the 89. I pulled the entire A/C system which got rid of a lot of weight. Everything with the T-belt went really well until the very end. Sunday night we had everythign reconnected and started putting in coolant. We got about a gallon of coolant in and then a huge leak started from where the waterpump and the engine block met! Fuck! I honestly can't think of what we did wrong... I may have not tightened one of the bolts, or the waterpump gasket didn't seal correctly... anyways it sucks and it all has to be pulled off and redone next weekend. here are some pics (under E30 timing belt):

We also had a very interesting Sunday. Its a long story and I dont' feel like typing it all now but basically we were driving eric's E30 and its not registered yet (yes stupid act but hey we're out in the country- who cares?) well obviously the state police do. eric has a summons to appear in court adn the cop took the plates off the car so we couldnt' drive it home. I saw some rednecks with a jacked up pickup and trailer at a Wendy's so I asked for them to help us tow the car home. $40 later we have the car home and they inform us one of their friends has an E30 sitting in his yard that hasn't moved in 4 years. We went and looked at it- a black 86 325 es- a somewhat rare model I believe because I think the S is for sport. has sport seats and some body trim pieces that look pretty cool. We came very VERY close to buying it for $300 but decided we dont' have the time for it now. The guy attempted changing the clutch so that needs to be done and the drive shaft is laying on the ground.

So if anyone might be interested, let me know

Be sure to use gasket sealer on that waterpump gasket. I had the same thing happen to me Sad

Hey Chris, pop me a PM on that E30. If it's a manual trans, I'm very interested.

Very.

No, really.

Coming to the dark side???

The 325eS is just a sport trim pkg on the regular eta car. I have seen some nice ones. the leather sport Recaro's are pretty comfortable and worth nearly the 300.00 if they aren't trashed. the S pkg should also have the LSD

I don't want to do a transmission swap, but if it's a manual trans I don't mind an E. It's probably got a broken TB, which is just an excuse to convert to an I or even a "big block" six.

But yes. The DSM will be on the block as soon as I buy fluids to put in the transfer case. I'll need a replacement. A proper wheel drive replacement.

I think it said a clutch job was underway so It is likely a manual.
I will be performing the tranny swap in the near future on the E30 so We will see how that goes......

Proper wheel drive...now that's funny

Well, let's see if Chris can hook a brother up.

Julie approves. She wants an E30. Maybe I'll get it for her for her birthday.

"Happy Birthday baby, I bought you an E30!"

I'd even put a little bow on it and everything.

Ha, you don't want to do a transmission swap but you want to swap to an 'i' or (bigger HA) an M30? Those motors are HUGE. Broken TB's aren't really a common issue anyway, so I don't think you'll have to worry about it.

I did a manual swap on my e30 and it's a pretty smooth process...but it still sucks.

TB can and DO break on E30 motors. They are destructive failures as it is an interference engine. Cam seals leak oil on the belt and.......bad ju ju

What difficulties did you run in to on the manual swap, Bill?

It's not that I don't want to do a trans swap, it's that there are enough E30's out there that I'll walk on one that's got an autotragic in favor of one with an automatic.

I did an auto-to-manual swap with dave once already. It's just a process I don't particularly care to repeat if I ain't gotta.

And, on the timing belt note if there's an E30 in a field owned by a pair of rednecks, then a timing belt seems a likely culprit, knowing nothing else about the car. Forget about it, or don't know about it, and SNAP! Piston and valve salad.
