Jake, are they retiring?

Nope, Dad is still going to commute down to work in NoVA as needed. Most of what he does can be accomplished remotely, then he can drive down for a few days at a time to do showings, listings, closings etc. He is also going to start working with Re/Max Coastal in the Bethany/Dewey/Rehoboth area.

Mom is likely going to be hired as the event coordinator/planner for their new community, so she'll get to keep the creative juices flowing but get paid consistently for it  Big Grin

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. We have real hardwoods in the majority of our house. It covers the living room/dining room/kitchen. Our laundry room has some form of vinyl plank flooring or laminate and when you open the door and see them side by side, it’s real obvious which is real wood. We did laminate flooring in all of our old house and, while it held up really well, I prefer real hardwood.

If real hardwood floors is what you really want, do that. Even if it is a little more expensive, it’s not like floors are something you can come back and upgrade easily like a kitchen appliance in a few months. Buy once cry once.

That's looks like roll vinyl. (Edit: on the computer, it actually looks like the life proof flat laminate snap together stuff but still not the best comparison to what laminate is capable of) My laminate plank looks much better than the real wood in my dad's house and will hold up slightly better (unless your dog pisses on your brand new rug on your brand new floor in your brand new house and you don't roll the carpet up and it stays wet for 24 hours and a seam lifts).

Even our rolled vinyl textured wood look flooring in our laundry room and guest bath looks better than that.  I wouldn't use that as a judging point. The options we were given on our house, the laminate looked way better than any of the hard woods we were offered. I also prefer the wide plank look vs narrow plank which for builder stuff is only offered in laminate.  Our friends in the neighborhood next to where we bought got real hardwood when they built and I had to actually ask them if it was laminate cause it looks like crap and they hate it and said it's super uneven (which is a poor install but still) and a bunch of the edges and corners have chipped.

We have oak stairs and the laminate pairs well with them although grey stain doesn't absorb well it seems. I guess they automatically do a real wood landing no matter what floor choice you pick for the rest of the house which I find weird but I think my laminate looks better. It actually matches better in normal lighting. The landing light is a little single pendant and the main floor is being lit by bright white led cans in this picture.[Image: 674db4096609be230449fe5f85b98b70.jpg][Image: 889198a539f54b7bbd364bb06862132f.jpg][Image: 1683560b86e4e34fd9e0b4f51b210d5f.jpg]

Also, our textured rolled vinyl in the bathroom. Not half bad for a guest bath.

We have oak hardwood in the whole house. The (pregnant) wife yesterday decided to move a mattress yesteday while I was at work. Sliding it across the floor. The mattress snagged some minute piece sticking up yesterday and kept on pulling (WTF GDMITE@@@@!!@@) and this is what happened. Fuck I have replaced pieces of hardwood before, but damnit this is going to be a pain in the ass. Now I also have a mattress with a hole in the edge!

Edit: note this aint even on and end-piece of a section...no idea how this happened..never felt an edge anywhere in the floor.

It was all pre-finished pieces and I have a box of spares, but still.

A little south of Bethany.

Red dot is their new neighborhood. They're next to (hehehe) Assawoman Wildlife Area which is apparently very pretty, and 4 miles from the beach. The top right corner of the map where it says Kim Hook, Remax Coastal, is where my dad will have an office.

I think I've decided I'm going with hardwood on the house. Just need to find the right tree/product/finish now. The samples we went home with are just not what we're looking for, which means I'll probably want something else that's more expensive.

Next, we'll need to order new appliances... who's got the best deals? Going from retailer to retailer picking roughly equivalent things seems like best buy and home depot have the best deals.

I was hoping costco would have something but none of their package deals have what we want. The longer warranty and free delivery & install is attractive but paying full nut fore a stove that everyone else has for $1000 off isnt. I must be an outlier in that I want a fancy stove but basic fridge and everyone else has the opposite. Really, I dont need a Keurig in my fridge door.

Best Buy ultimately had the best deals when we looked last year, but we targeted a holiday deal, specifically, and stored the appliances until they were ready to be installed.

Best buy had a good return policy when they accepted the defective microwave with out issue.

Btw

Broken water heater since x-mas eve... Technician is coming out today. I'm crossing fingers that it's just a repair that can be made today...

Yeah think you missed the best sales. The Black Friday deals were when I got my washer and dryer and fridge from Costco. Fridge was slightly cheaper than home Depot but home Depot carries like a special budget version of the same fridge with now features that was about the same price but it got shitty reviews. The washer and dryer were like $1000 less than everywhere else and that was with pedestals where the rest weren't.

Ultimately I really wanted the warranty with the crapshoot that is modern day appliances so probably would have went with Costco unless they were way more expensive. Free 4 year warranty is hard to beat. Plus they were actually better deals for Black Friday (which was the entire month for appliances)

Most of what I've seen is that retailers are carrying the 'black friday' prices though the end of the year, except Costco.

We got ours 4th of July from HD, they stacked discounts for the # of appliances you purchased.

Memorial, 4th, Labor, all had the same deals on appliances.

Typically manufactures will give a discount through retailers of you get all four from the same manufacturer. We did that with Samsung stuff and are pretty happy
The only weird thing is that we needed to return the microwave to best buy and we bought a whirlpool microwave from Lowes to replace it with (somehow didn't get penalized for doing that).

Yeah both HD and BB did the stacked discount thing.

The thing that I didnt count on which is fucking my budget is the microwave drawer being 3x the cost of a normal one.

We ended up buying our appliances from a local appliance retailer. I always thought they were more expensive and therefore a dying breed, but they had all the same manufacturer specials as the big box stores and were a few % cheaper.

Do you have to go with a microwave drawer based on your kitchen design? I always find those insanely annoying because they are never placed in an easy to get to place plus having to bend over to access it.

I could probably come up with a different solution, but they recommended it. I have to admit it does look nice but I'm really skeptical of the function.
