Annual College Challenge Autox Sept. 29 (SATURDAY)

If I get into autocross i'd really consider parting out all those mods to race in G Stock. We'll see..

Oh and yes, I am boosting more than stock psi.

SMF can be an extremely fast class, so don't feel bad if you get your ass handed to you. The biggest issue you'll have is tires (which is really the biggest issue period when it comes to autocross). A stock(ish) SRT-4 in G stock would be a great fit though. Throw a sway bar on there, adjustable struts, and the widest sticky tires you can throw on the stock wheels and you'd be set.

If you get some sticky tires, though, your car would probably be awesome for running NASA-X events. They have a much better upclassing system when you're looking at a lot of modifications which seems to keep the playing field pretty level.

No need for hoo hoos starting off. Hell I'm still running street tires. Its fun beating people who are running hoo hoos on street tires. Just get a good sticky street tire and suspension mods after you get the hang of it.

I run a Corolla in H-stock with the cheapest all-seasons I could get my hands on, and Samuel Reiman runs G-stock with all seasons as well, and we actually hold our own against a lot of much faster cars. They make rib us a little for the noisy tires and slow cars, but all in all, we seem to have a lot of support as underdogs.

I think there is a lot of wisdom in driving on slick tires at least starting out. You definitely learn a little bit about moving the car around to maximize traction, being smooth on the wheel and smooth on the brakes. Then again, I can't afford more rubber, so I'm sure there are others who might disagree.

Very few people will disagree other than the fact that an old tire becomes unpredictable in handling and can sometimes teach you bad habits.

However, the reliance on a sticky tire like a hoosier is far worse to teach you bad habits in my opinion. It is hard to explain, but the lower the limit of the car, the quicker you get to the maximum the car can do for your current driving line/style. If you stay with it, you then learn, that if you change your line or style, the maximum of the car can go up.

I hear EVERY autocross, and EVERYTIME I instruct people saying "I am at the limit of what the car can do, I need stickier tires/coilovers/etc". Without fail, those are the people that are slow or "slow-er" than the top people. You tire may be at the limit, but that is because your driving style overloads the tire and does not let it work.

There are a bunch of club members in here that have a ton of experience with autox/road racing that you should latch onto. Some are not very vocal on the forums, such as Peter Tyson, David Lonnquest and Dr. Thomas, and then there are those who are active on the forum. Seek these guys out and I promise youll have more to learn from them than you can absorb for quite a while.

That's part of the reason why I refuse to drop money on anything for my car right now. I know I would pick up speed with a set of tires, but I know there is a lot more speed in what I've got. I just have trouble with spinning my tires coming off corners, and that's more throttle control than tires. I'm happy with what I've learned so far, but I really want to get everything out of my car that I can.

Hell, the only reason I have Hawk pads is because they were $20 cheaper than OEM and my brakes needed changed. I don't even see a bit of advantage there. But you're definitely right, I have trouble with overloading my all-seasons. I think there is a second or two left in them over what I've run in the past.

Registered for Sat and Sun. Just finished putting camber plates on last night and got some Advan rubber to go on tomorrow. I have a Co-driver as of now for both days, but like everyone else, I'm more than willing to give some ride alongs for anyone interested. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting some of the new members!

Did you kill the Hoosiers? Someone had to do it. My old v710s may never die. They are probably in Texas now, 300 runs in.

Is anybody going to be at the autocross Sunday (I *might* make it)? Or anyone making the VMP autox? I am available to jump in people's passenger seats and help you get faster. My instruction has gotten a lot better this year, and as long as you dont mind getting yelled at you will be good!

I will be doing both days next weekend. I'm not making the VMP autoX as of now. I need to see how my tires hold up after this weekend because I need new ones soon. Since I don't have extra wheels, I don't really want to rip them up before winter.

As much as I don't want to find out how bad I am at autoXing, I would definitely like to have someone ride with me at some point. I know there is a lot more speed, but I am terribly embarrassed by the speed I know I'm giving up due to doing a burnout out of the turns. I think part of it is lack of experience and overdriving in. It seems like if I go all out and find the limits and then dial back for the last run, I do a little better.

I might need some help for sure if these guys in the Mini are going to be fast. I would love to take out a Mini with the Corolla.

Ok Bitches. After College AutoX, Fiesta en Fuego is next Saturday. I figure we'll get started around 4pm. We'll have some chili, some carnitas, some beers, some margaritas (we still have mix left over from last year). Gonna try to get the pong table from Matt and Lincoln to set up in the garage. We need some other foods- so I know Jason's bring some other kinds of chili, but we'll need some desserts and shit (I'm looking at you Polen, those cookies were awesome). Current students, if you don't want hassle with bringing food cause you are autoxing, can you bring $5 to cover some food/beerz. Anything we get and don't spend on foodz/beerz will be donated right back to the club. But for now, We've just cleaned our entire house, so its ready for destruction.

I'm assuming it will be OK to throw some chili together at your house Friday evening?

I'll definitely bring something. It's hard to make a ton of cookies with only one pan here. Costco desserts ftw though, I'll probably hit that up.

I'll be there both days but that's a given. Not doing VMP though, will be lucky enough to have any rubber on the tires left after this coming weekend.

Just saw this - have you already asked the Breeze about coverage? If not, I can talk to the editors next time I'm in the office and try and convince them... it might be hard to get a writer out though.
