At three times the weight, 1/2 of the driven wheels, and a fraction of the lateral G's?

I'm not going to say when I get it back, but I can tell you it's going to be very soon. I don't want to jinx it hah.

The idle issue SHOULD be fixed though. I'm super stoked. I predict getting pulled over at LEAST once on the drive home for excessively loud exhaust.

And, until I get this catback switched out with a quieter one, I doubt I'll be visiting you guys up in the Fairfax / Arlington area with it. That's just asking for $75 out of my pocket =p

For 6000$ I could make my 71 be 4WD with the nice 454, and be only about 250lbs "front heavy" and still have the whole car only weigh 3600 lbs. I was just commenting on how expensive aftermarket shit for imports is. I was doing a little browsing around since I bought the legacy - aftermarket cat bat exhaust kits are 3 times what I had a whole X-pipe system custom fabbed to go on my SS (just for example). And cylinder heads, with HALF as many combustion chambers, are so expensive I could probably build a nice set of aluminum AFR's with titanium valves and springs and ARP bolts and all kinds of other ridiculous race goodies for the same cost.....i'm saying he's got a nice setup it looks like, but man import shit is expensive

Part of it is supply and demand - there is a big market for domestic go fast bits.... but the bigger part is whats being done. Taking a stock 300hp engine and making it 800+ hp capable. Taking the quality of of work used in this build and applying it to a V8 and the costs will be comparable - much different than ordering a bunch of parts out of a summit racing catalog.

I'm not so sure about that. I had my block machined and a lot of extra head work done to VERY exacting tolerances. I know, I have a set of micrometers and dial bore indicators, and know how to use them. My main crank journals were exact on 2 of them, one thousandth off on one, and two thousandths off on another. My cylinder honing was dead on. I had screw in studs and rocker arm guideplates installed on the heads, and ported and polished, and had everything zero decked so that my pistons are all the same amount "in the hole." (15 thousandths I wanna say..cant quite remember). All that work cost me maybe...800$ I think. Also, all the machine work was done by Lynwood Daughtery....a pretty famous machinist around here who used to do Nascar engines for Terry Labonte and who has a quite impressive drag race shop of his own now with some top notch cars.

Edit: I am not saying anything about the quality of the actual parts being used in assembling the heads or any other parts. Also, I had the crank rotated and balanced - included in the price. My main point was that it seems like this shop is charging a ridiculous labor rate - or he bought some phenomenal full out race parts. Just for comparison - I dont know his total, but for twice that amount, you can buy a hand made LS7(500+hp corvette motor with warranty).

What about the blueprinting, balancing, clearancing, assembly and installation.... all that is hours, and it adds up on the total bill pretty quickly. I wouldnt do this myself, but I think its a pretty impressive build.

Whenever I get around to rebuilding the integra shortblock on my engine stand I'm going to do everything myself, but I dont have much desire to build things with 500+ hp Wink I will be happy with 155 whp.

All of the parts in the block are top of the line, forged, titanium, etc. It is an all out race motor, and shares no similarities to a stock STI longblock other than its outward appearance. That crankshaft was custom made, knife-edged and honed. The headwork alone on that must have taken hours and hours and hours.

The cams alone in this block are over $1,000. The total cost of just the motor is just under what that LS7 would cost, and it will have the potential to produce just under twice the wheel horsepower of that Corvette motor without any further modification to the longblock at all.

I'm not at all saying this motor is better than any other motor, and I would definitely NOT recommend doing a build to this extent unless you're serious about creating something truly unique and powerful, or you're just crazy. haha

Yeah...I mean, no doubt, you'll have something that will turn heads if people know what they're looking at. I just couldnt see doing it for just that though. I'd have to be out there winning some races and trying to pay for it.

One of my other main motivations for going this big was to create something that is extremely durable and will give me some room to play with for future power increases. aka I don't want this thing to break again =p

Oh, and to .RJ - I did all that assembly and clearancing work myself. That's why it's a fine idea to invest in quality measuring devices =)

EVERYthing was balanced at the machine shop - included in that 800$

You may think that is special, but you just described a pretty standard engine rebuild. (which $8k is way too much for)

The work Lee had done was extensive, very impressive and not to be compared with a plain jane domestic v8 rebuild.

Since no one is asking. Lee, what the hell are you doing with that thing? Track, drag, scare small children.

Also, you should send in your car info to some car rag and see if they'll do an article on it.

i think the significant other doesn't want to see him on a high-po bike. so i bet this is the next closest thing in terms of speed

and for the record, 500+ horsepower subies could probably scare a rabid lumberjack, let alone small children. boxer growl

The first thing I'm going to do is get used to driving with that much horsepower. It's going to take a serious adjustment, to both that and to the new clutch. After that, I haven't decided yet. I'd like to take it once or twice to the strip, but I'm a little concerned about breaking the axles with the launches needed to get good 60' times. Possibly some autoX or road course.

Again, it's going to take some serious adjustment, even coming from 392whp.

Scotty, when are you going to make it back up here so I can give you a ride??? Sad I miss you brovah!
