As stated on facebook, I have a race seat for "loan" to the club. Crowd fund about $30 for some steel at home depot and I can weld up a bracket for this car, and host a couple members if they want to have a "try" at welding.

Well when you have people lined up constantly asking to use your welder/AR and burn through your supplies/ammo. Asking for $10 so you don't pay to help other people constantly doesn't seem ridiculous does it?

I get multiple requests a week to help people with stuff/use my tools/supplies etc. I started realizing it was costing me hundreds of dollars a year (and I wasnt getting compensated back). I TRY to help people as much as I can but I have been burned many times. On a normal track weekend, I have at least 4-5 people going in my trailer borrowing tools/using supplies and maybe 1-2 of those people ever restock me or throw me a couple bucks.

I'm ribbing you dude :lol: But for real is a couple hundred bucks a year going to break you if you genuinely want to be generous? Do your friends ever buy you beers or pick up your dinner? I doubt they ask you to pay them back. It's not like we're broke college kids anymore man, we're all doing more than fine enough now to help people out when they need it and not worry about keeping a running tab.

And it always comes back around. If you're that worried about the money you should avoid being generous in the first place :wink:

It doesn't make or break me, but hundreds of dollars and loads of my time + people using my tools and having to locate them and get them back? I actually tend not to get beers or dinner or anything. THAT is the issue. I stopped letting people borrow my truck or offers to use my trailer when my truck got damaged (and they didnt even offer to fix it), another time someone used almost a full tank of fuel in my diesel truck ($120) and returned it with 1/4 tank. No compensation, no nothing... Hell I have a $250 specialty tool that someone borrowed and I am harassing to get it back from them after they borrowed it for free and used that tool to fix somebody's car and charged that person 6 months ago..

You act like I am being a ball breaker yet I am giving a free race seat and welding up a bracket for this project...for free. I turn away people who are wanting to pay me for these same things and I have multiple projects in my garage right now. In fact I have a friend's race car that hit a wall that came in this week that I have already lifted the motor back into the car, fixed engine mounts/trans mounts, replaced harmonic damper, control arms, brake lines, seat, power steering rack, tie rods, etc. I asked him to buy me a tool ($45) as compensation. Work that normally is a couple thousand... Meanwhile my race car is on jack stands sitting for me to get time on it, the corvette has to go to the body shop and get repaired, and I have maintenance on my truck to do.

It's ungrateful people that think $10 for hours of my time to teach them, use tools that I spent $800 on, and pay $80 to refill each time...yet I am greedy. Go fuck yourself.

Being that I have seen how much the proper tools can cost, and how much a normal shop would charge to do this work, there should be no issues throwing $50-$100 towards somebodies time, patience, knowledge, supplies, garage space, fuel, etc. MM is a family of car and motorsport enthusiasts who all generally have the same goal in mind. But just because two people are friends, doesn't mean one has to take the grunt of the load all the time. Yes, it's important to be grateful and say thank you, but you also need to realize how much resources people offer and that at the end of the day they could have simply said no and worked on their own projects. For this reason, there should be no issues with giving somebody money or equal compensation for what they provide, given you would have had to pay probably 10x more to someone else in order to get the work done with half the attention to detail. We appreciate DJ's contribution to this club and to our many projects, and while I haven't asked for help personally(yet lol), I know that when the time comes, there will be no complaints in compensating him for taking the time out of his day to help.

Yes, offering compensation, being respectful with borrowed things or buying a tank of gas is what normal friends would offer to do for each other.

DJ, it sounds like you've got some pent up frustration from setting aside your own stuff to help out your friends who aren't being respectful or grateful. That would probably get frustrating for me too. But it also sounds like a you problem with how you interact with and pick your friends :wink:

It's the difference between treating these opportunities as "time with friends" or "time with clients". Obviously, teaching people to weld and using materials for the sake of practice would mean you need to purchase said materials. If you're already going to be welding some stuff and someone comes by to watch and observe, that's nothing special.

Sounds like the tricky part is establishing the right level of expectations before lending a tool (return time, for personal use) or doing work on someone's car. I will be sure to bring you a six pack when I bring the cam tools back and I promise they are being used on my own car and not for profit. Thanks for lending me those. You'll get 'em back after this weekend. Not sure what Chris is doing with the M54 set but I don't want to be lumped into that bucket.

I guess having the specialty tools and the lift makes it tough. For example, if I want to come over and use the lift and have you help me do rod bearings, I'm using the giant tool you bought (lift) and your knowledge/time as a friend to do this job together. I'd buy parts and could bring "shop incidentals" (Brakeclean, etc) or toss you $20-40-whatever to cover some of that. But beyond that, I don't want to pay you to help me do the work. If I'm going to pay for the work to be done, I want to just leave you the keys and go sip mimosas or whatever people do when a shop works on their car.

I'll lend my truck to trusted friends, with the agreement that I give it to you with a full tank and you return it with one (full means no bickering over gauge level). You dent it or break it, you buy it.

Long-winded answer that more or less says I agree with you, and that setting expectations early on helps everyone stay happy

Sorry guys, it wasn't really meant about the MM kids. I was kind of hoping the $30 in materials for the steel to build the bracket would crowdsource from alum
