you guys don't need lifted stuff to rallyx, just don't slam it.

local guy i run with at my rallyx's down here just drives his spec miata with street tires on it  and our course is rough enough that you can almost get air under the tires when we drive up over the banking on the dirt oval the course is made out of.

if the course is rough enough that you're bottoming out in maybe one or two places, just put a skidplate beneath your oil pan and your diff. too much ride height is only going to ruin the car. if you're getting air consistently, no amount of lift is going to save you from breaking stuff...but smart course designers don't build courses that way or nobody would ever come back.

i promise i'll shut up, but i stole these from my project thread just to make it clear that you don't need fancy shit to have a good time. here's what showed up at my last event:

slammed integra
[Image: ATL-SCCA-RX-April-26-2015-158.jpg]

creatively-"slammed" impala with snow tires on the front only

this ancient 323 was $600 and beat most of the AWD times. totally stock, the driveshafts were clacking so bad i thought it was rod bearings and the engine was going to get out of the engine bay and strangle the driver. 2 18yr old kids co-owned it and outdrove all of us.

all these came and drove home. the impala was FTD if i remember correctly Confusedhock:

guess who's cars left on flatbeds? a beat WRX wagon that spun a bearing and a minty STi that de-beaded a tire.

I can't tell if half of you are joking or what. No to the Miata and lifting it. No to these crazy cars ideas.

I say we buy an old econobox and beat on it. Reasonable, plausible, possible, and fun.

You guys are thinking way to much into this. Here are the answers to your question.

https://winchester.craigslist.org/cto/6015284284.html

Show up with $1k cash and I bet you go home with any of them. Parts are cheap and easy to get when it breaks. Anything 1992 or older also gets vintage tags so there is no inspection and insurance is crazy cheap (cheap as in I pay $7 a month for my '90 Miata with an agreed value of $7500......)

In typical fashion, every camp in MM pushes what they drive / know how to work on. A second reason the Merkur project failed.

Well thinking objectively again (I have no horse in this race, I'd donate and grab some seat time but can't house/feed/pay for/insure this thing), you want a platform that's cheap, plentiful, reliable, but easy to work on/easy to find parts for/has inexpensive parts when it does break, approachable for the widest range of drivers/abilities, cheap/easy on consumables, cheap to insure, and as fun as possible to drive (this leans towards lightweight/RWD when one talks approachable to most drivers possible).

Miata is always the answer

It's just science. A lot of MM'ers like 'em, but that don't make the science wrong

Or the econobox and rally the piss out of it.

The best beater car is the one that runs well, has widely available parts and needs very little for the least amount of money, make be damned. A $1000 XYZ with all maintenance up to date is a better bet than the non running, missing body panel, crazy mile examples Scott just posted.

Here is an example. Just get in and beat it up. These are actually pretty competitive in AutoX as well.

Miatas are wonderful cars, but I don't see them as being "the answer" for this. You have to either make sure the soft top is in good shape or that it comes with a hardtop. It's hard to get taller drivers to fit well in one when left largely stock (which this car will be). And you will either need a rollbar or hardtop or both to run it in rallycross - the SCCA Rally-X rules are pretty strict about it - and that is additional cost that a coupe or sedan would not incur.

What about a first-gen Focus? Those are cheap as dirt, run pretty well and seem to be well-liked in various motorsport circles.

that's a great suggestion. you can also retrofit a brand new SVT suspension from Ford Motorsports for under $300 shipped.

its a non-interference engine in a kinda-light hatch with a great depreciation curve. i've seen quite a few in rally circles, probably because they're popular in europe too. you can haul 4 people + gear with the space and not shed a tear when it gets rock chipped and caked in garbage from motorsport duty.

My first rallycross was in one these (I think one older generation).

I find it funny that people who don't have race cars are the ones that suggest off the wall and "odd" choices. Some of us have seen a lot of this type of enthusiasm for odd ball race cars and watch the inevitable COOL/BROKEN/FRUSTRATED/EXHAUSTED/GIVE UP play it's way through.

Not trying to be a dick here, but Scott and I have the most experience by far and are suggesting cars that are plentiful, lots of them at rallyx/autox/track (think spares!), and are known to be reliable in these situations. Volvos, hyundais, etc sound off the wall and get the attention at these events for being weird and cool to run vs the "everyone runs a miata"; but trust me, you want the car everyone else runs....

Took a quick look at results for WDCR Rallyx. Take a look at the results below. Take a look at the largest classes over multiple events and a theme emerges....

Hint: Its the RWD classes with majority of them being miatas and BMWs closely followed by the AWD class with subarus...

I am not advocating any model; that Hyundai was the result of picking the first sub 2g car I found that wasn't close to 30 years old with 200k miles that looked like it had been parked for the past 8 years. A Miata is a great choice, so is a Civic, so is an Integra, so is a Volvo, so is a Focus, so is a Saturn, so is an Exx BMW. I am advocating getting something that is not a basket case that "won't stay running" or is missing body panels Wink

I might actually consider that for a rainy day DD. If someone looks at this but doesn't turn it into the racekur, I might go get it.
