I pay in $250/mo... just for me. Copays are $20 for the doctor, $40 for specialists (that added up fast when I busted my shoulder), and there's some split of coverage past the copay for big things. I forget what it is, but hospital visits arent cheap. Its really not very good. Ouch bro that's pretty brutal for a company sponsored plan. Unless you have preexisting conditions (like heart problems, HBP, etc.) that are going to fuck you in underwriting, I would almost consider dropping the company plan if you can and picking up a personal policy. It sounds like you could save >50% on your premiums and get better coverage.

They pay the premium too. My only paycheck deduction will be taxes, and if I decided to contribute extra to the 401k plan (they put in 6% automatically)
I knew them paying the premiums was good, but I never thought about the coinsurance part of it You are beyond fortunate. Don't take this personally, because I'm not pointing the finger at you by any means, but people in your situation happen to be the people who are the first (and loudest) to bitch about health care reform. Mostly because they just don't get it. It's easy to take something for granted when YOU don't actually have to pay for it.
My point is, count your blessings that you are getting free healthcare, because 98% of us aren't and a good portion of that are paying a LOT in premiums and out of pocket when they go to the hospital.
Not taken personally at all, but just to clarify - you meant bitch about health care reform as in the repeal the current plan bitcher? If so, you can count me in on that. My belief of that has little to do with my current health care plan though. I have carried my own personal insurance before, and it's not THAT expensive. My plan was as good as the plan I was dropped from (my moms government plan) and only cost about 120$ a month for reasonable co-pays and deductibles. I also know that the plan that I got into with my new company was a lucky break. I can't help but wonder though if one company in the private sector can offer those kind of benefits, why can't others? Instead of massive government takeover of health insurance that's coming down the pike, could we not have settled for regulation and legislation that provided incentives for better company sponsored benefits? Perhaps in combination with better preventative care, and other incentives to the populus to discourage too-frequent doctor visits. That last part is just my view of course, as a person who barely takes any medicine unless I am dying, and can't remember the last time I went to the doctor.

There are a lot of people that pay a LOT more for health insurance, and it costs businesses a lot to pick up good coverage for their employees.

I hate hate hate that the norm is an employer being forced into providing health insurance. Just let us all get it and shop for it like we all get car insurance, let companies compete, let the market work, we'd all be in just a handful of massive "groups", and we'd all be better off.

Channing, you should know better than to try and be reasonable and sane.
Go back to breaking decks.

Just because nothing comes out of Derek's paycheck doesnt mean its "free"
It is part of Derek's compensation for his work, just like the money in his check, and it is safe to assume were there no health insurance included in his benefits, there would be more in his paycheck.
Working for yourself, or in a situation where you do not get employer subsidized healthcare, you are chosing to put yourself in a more agressive spot on the risk/reward curve. You have the potential to make a lot more money, but you give up the perks and security of working for a big company.

I got all of my HSA stuff in the mail finally, it came with a convenient debit card I can use for medical / dental / health stuff and it's tied to my account.
What I didn't realize was after you invest over $1,000 into the account you can actually invest some of that HSA money in a similar manner like you would with 401ks. That's kind of cool, just another way to force me to save for retirement which I'm so bad at haha
