New health care bill - WRXtranceformed - 03-22-2010 So as you all probably know now it's heading to Obama's desk to get signed off on. What are all your thoughts on it? I've been hearing a lot of anti-government, socialistic claims mostly from people who are uneducated and listen to ultra-conservative drivel and quote it for truth. I personally think there are pros and cons. Being self-employed, it sounds like it's actually going to help keep my out of pocket lower. I REALLY like the fact that insurance companies can't deny coverage for preexisting conditions (I used to work for two different insurance companies and I saw first hand how bad some people got fucked), although that's going to throw the claims depts into a frenzy. What are your thoughts? Is it going to help or hurt you or make no difference at all? Re: New health care bill - CaptainHenreh - 03-22-2010 Well, get ready for some "anti-government socialistic claims" from a college educated person-who-despises-talk-radio. There are some seriously idiotic "provisions" in this bill. 1: A cap of 2500 dollars on a flex spending plan. Look, are my health care costs tax-free or not? Someone needs to fucking decide. I have medical costs that aren't covered by my health care plan, do I have to pay taxes on them? Why does a cap even exist? What's the logic here? Next year I was going to put my eye surgery on my flex spending plan but I GUESS I CAN'T NOW so I'll just pay 30% extra on the balance. Retarded. 2: "If you can't afford to buy health insurance, here's a tax!" Great. Now this doesn't affect me, but how is this going to be enforced? You can call it a "fee" or a "penalty" or a "happy fun charge" if you want, but if it's money I have to pay to the government and I have no choice in the matter, then it's a FUCKING TAX. 3: The "you have to take anyone" provision. Look, it's very sad when someone gets rejected for coverage. But to a certain degree, it is an *insurance* company. Can I get car insurance for my wrecked car? No, that's called insurance fraud. What about getting fire insurance for my burning house? Now, I agree that this needs to change, but in reality all this is going to do is make everyone's premiums skyrocket. That shit isn't free! It costs money! Someone has to pay for it, and the people who are going to pay for it are healthy people. 4: Insurance subsidies. Again, who pays? Oh, that's right. Me. You take from those that have, and give to those who haven't. And this isn't socialism because...? 5: Once more, who's going to pay for this? Between TARP, the Great Economic Clitrub of 2009, and the two wars we're fighting in the catbox, we're fucking broke. We're running wild on deficit spending as it is, so let's spend 930 billion dollars on health care. BRILLIANT. Look, health care does need to be reformed, but as I've said, this isn't the way. I could go on and on about things we could have tried before this travesty, and to be perfectly honest, I'd have rather seen a comprehensive "abolish private insurance" single-payer system before this fucking garbage. But it's too late now. On the other hand, if Democrats what 1994: Part Deux, who am I to stop them? Re: New health care bill - .RJ - 03-22-2010 CaptainHenreh Wrote:5: Once more, who's going to pay for this? The biggest problem right there. All the rest is noise and dick swinging. If they wanted real health care reform it would be a simple bill and cost $0 in taxpayer money. Now that I am well planted in the "govt thinks i make too much $$" tax bracket, I'm sure I'll get to hand over more. Re: New health care bill - Kaan - 03-22-2010 RJ break out your check book... i nominate you to pay for this all. If everyone gets a healthcare plan... i propose we start an "everyone gets a gun plan" or "everyone gets a shiny new motorcycle plan" or "everyone gets a shiny new car plan." Re: New health care bill - Apoc - 03-22-2010 Guys, no one is going to pay for it. The world is ending in 2 years. How can anyone not like a bill that taxes fake baking?? Re: New health care bill - WRXtranceformed - 03-22-2010 There were a lot of health programs created over the years that a lot of us will probably never see the benefit from but we still paid for. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security (Ole? haha). Reform had to happen in our corrupt ass insurance and healthcare systems, Obama could have either put it off until our deficit is heading back in the right direction like it was in the Clinton era or we can make moves now and set it up for the future when Congressmen will have to grab their nuts and their pride and approve some tax hikes that aren't going to be popular. There is a lot that needs to happen for reform like this to be successful and a lot of it comes from our elected state representatives, and if all goes well it WILL lead to a healthier, happier populace who will in turn be able to reinvest in the economy instead of selling their souls to pay for medical bills. Re: New health care bill - .RJ - 03-22-2010 Its not an either/or. I do think health/insurance reform needs to happen, but not in a way that costs the taxpayers $1 trillion when we're already in the red and borrowing from china as fast as we can. Re: New health care bill - JohnC - 03-22-2010 I've only skimmed the new bill, so this may not be entirely accurate. Is it true that anyone who doesn't have a valid Hawaiian birth certificate gets aborted by a death panel, at taxpayer expense and with the blessing of the Archdiocese of Omaha? If so, count me in. 8) Re: New health care bill - WRXtranceformed - 03-22-2010 Pulled shamelessly from Wikipedia. Social Security was most definitely not popular when it was enacted, but it now (still controversially) keeps 40% of Americans 65 or older out of poverty. Steward Machine Company v. Davis, 301 U.S, 548[22] (1937) held, in a 5ÔÇô4 decision, that, given the exigencies of the Great Depression, "[It] is too late today for the argument to be heard with tolerance that in a crisis so extreme the use of the moneys of the nation to relieve the unemployed and their dependents is a use for any purpose narrower than the promotion of the general welfare". The arguments opposed to the Social Security Act (articulated by justices Butler, McReynolds, and Sutherland in their opinions) were that the social security act went beyond the powers that were granted to the federal government in the Constitution. They argued that, by imposing a tax on employers that could be avoided only by contributing to a state unemployment-compensation fund, the federal government was essentially forcing each state to establish an unemployment-compensation fund that would meet its criteria, and that the federal government had no power to enact such a program. Re: New health care bill - CaptainHenreh - 03-22-2010 Lee, lemme get this straight. The .Gov oversteps it's constitutional bounds once (social security) to create the biggest ponzi scheme in history (that is set to fail, and would always fail without a positive working population growth rate) and because it helped some people to the detriment of others...so it's OK for it to do it again? Not sure I follow your logic. Your logic smells suspiciously of "ZOMG WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING, EVEN IF IT'S BAD". Re: New health care bill - ViPER1313 - 03-22-2010 Rex - I agree with you except for point 3. Car accidents are avoidable (lots of the time, and based largely on driver skill), many illnesses are not. My aunt paid her insurance premiums for 30+ years before she came down with pancreatic cancer (which she was lucky to survive from...), after her surgery she was dropped from her insurance. No way in hell anyone will accept her now - how fucked up is that. It would be like you paying car insurance for 30 years, you leaving your car parked in your garage, someone torching your house (no fault of your own) while you were at work and the insurance company paying for the car, then dropping your policy and charging you 10x as much if you want to get another one. If you and I have to pay more now so we can't get screwed like that, so be it. Everybody wants everything given to them at no cost - of course this bill is going to cost you and I additional money in the short term and in the long run. People will bitch and whine and moan about spending money on health care (public or private) right up until they are sick or someone close to them is sick and isn't covered. People in America like to think of themselves as being totally self sufficient and not needing a large government as they drive on federally funded roads, drink EPA monitored drinking water, send their kids to federally funded schools, type on a Internet that was conceived by the military, etc.... it's great in theory, but not reality. Re: New health care bill - Kaan - 03-22-2010 governing rules for insurance companies... so they cant drop people for being sick, cover preexisting conditions, etc... didnt need this bill. it didnt need $1 trillion Re: New health care bill - CaptainHenreh - 03-22-2010 ViPER1313 Wrote:Rex - I agree with you except for point 3. Re: New health care bill - WRXtranceformed - 03-22-2010 No, let me make that clear, I am not a proponent of Social Security. Mostly because I'm never going to see anything from it. I can't deny though that it has really helped a lot of people, even if we've had to pay for it. This bill is sort of in the same boat for many Americans. All they are seeing is how much it's going to affect their taxes through their employers for the most part. This isn't just handing out money to old people though, I feel like this kind of reform will help keep the corruption in the insurance/healthcare biz in check and more importantly will help a lot of people receive healthcare that would normally bankrupt them or lead them to a less healthy lifestyle...neither of which is conducive to promoting a strong economy in our country. There are a LOT of upper-middle to middle class Americans who can't afford healthcare btw, many of which have been pushed to financial ruin because of these issues. You guys just don't know because you haven't dealt with them on a daily basis like I did when I worked in the industry. These are people who would normally keep working, spending money, and contributing to society but are instead losing their savings and their homes because of medical bills that insurance companies won't cover because of preexisting conditions or exclusions. Re: New health care bill - Apoc - 03-22-2010 I'm curious how those who oppose the bill would have done the things we agree to need in the current governmental climate. Also, the bill is supposed to create a surplus of $100B+. Now if we give it the benefit of the doubt and it actually does that, a lot of what we're really paying for is to reduce the deficit, which we're going to have to do anyway. I know, I know... don't take any more money from us and reduce the size of spending/government. I'm as much for smaller government and lower taxes as the next guy, but I'm reasonable enough to know that both parties like to spend; one taxes us for it, the other doesn't... so it's a non-starter. For the record, I'm not a fan of the bill either... I just don't see how we can reasonably accomplish what people want without some unpleasantness and I haven't seen any suggestions (media or elsewhere that isn't grandstanding) to that end. All it would do is lead to even more outrageous premiums. You guys with your cushy government jobs and ridiculous fucking benefits that all of US are paying for just have no idea. You are most definitely not the majority in our country. Re: New health care bill - .RJ - 03-22-2010 Apoc Wrote:Also, the bill is supposed to create a surplus of $100B+. The CBO has a pretty long history of underestimating costs, or perhaps more accurately, estimating the will of our gov't to control spending to what they said they would. Apoc Wrote:For the record, I'm not a fan of the bill either... There were several other bills introduced, on both sides of the fence. Lets not forget this whole cluster was very far from the fair, transparent and bi-partisan solution that we were all promised - but thats business as usual in DC. Take a look at this article, originally written for the WSJ - Quote:By JOHN MACKEY Re: New health care bill - Evan - 03-22-2010 First off, this bill will not reduce insurance premiums. Even the democrats dont say it will. Do not mistake this bill for health care reform. It is health insurance regulation. Health insurance is expensive because health care is expensive. Insurance companies are not money grubbing evil corporations stealing your money and hoarding it. You agree to a contract of insurance, you give them agreed on premiums, and then the insurance company pays out (to your group) almost exactly the same amount it has taken from you (your group). Their money is made while they hold onto that money before they give it back. Insurance industry has one of the smallest profit margins of any industry at around 3% Decreasing medical costs is what is important but was not addressed. For example, why doesnt the bill include tort reform (ie - lawsuit reform)? Malpractice insurance is an enormous contributor to increasing medical costs. (hint: guess what profession is a major democrat political contributor?) Whose idea that increasing demand of a limited resource is going to fix the problems of that limited resource? Good quote from CNN article this morning "But with a critical shortage of primary care providers, these newly insured patients may have nowhere to turn for medical care. Massachusetts, the only state that offers universal coverage, suffers from some of the worst primary care wait times in the country despite having the highest concentration of doctors nationwide." what we got is the complete opposite of centuries of economics have taught us. We need deregulation, open insurance compeition, lessened overhead and more doctors. (And thats not even touching the much bigger problem of the customer excluded from the cost) Re: New health care bill - Evan - 03-22-2010 ViPER1313 Wrote:People in America like to think of themselves as being totally self sufficient and not needing a large government as they drive on federally funded roads, drink EPA monitored drinking water, send their kids to federally funded schools, type on a Internet that was conceived by the military, etc.... it's great in theory, but not reality. Now tell me Adam, how are those things very very different from healthcare. Hint: think socks.
