Thanks RJ. I didn't know what Rex was talking about. Seriously though, if Nissan says it's not a platform car, why is it a platform car? I get the skyline is a G-coupe but the GTR is on its own platform. No?

Dude, it's even in the name, "Prime Midship Platform". It's just a modified FM platform, using some exotic composites in the unibody. This isn't a bad thing, but let's not kid ourselves, it's not like Nissan developed 100% new tooling for the GT-R or that Renault isn't at least thinking about a "Le SuperVoiture" based on the same platform (Oh, there's that word again.)

I'm not saying it's a G35 with a body kit and a hot motor. But it pretty much is to the FM cars what the Z06 vette is to the mundane vette.

Yeah I think that had this car been designed totally from the ground up it could have been quite a bit lighter. I think the thing with the FM (and by proxy the PM) platform has been that it was compromised a bit in order to be flexible which has made the sports/sporty cars built on the platform heavier than they needed to be.

The upside to platform sharing is lower cost. At $80k its not cheap but for what it is, I think its not bad.

Again though, I wouldn't ride on the Nurburgring lap time bandwagon just yet. Let's wait until there are some controlled comparos.

When Nissan unveiled the GTR here they started it out with 3 huge video screens above the stage. They showed them tested the car and what not, then they started the onboard lap with the lap timer in big numbers on the screen. At the end of the lap it stopped on the 7:38.54 and it said, "The legend is real" and that is when they rolled out the car. A very well done marketing move if I do say so myself.

Carlos Ghosn didn't really say much that no one else doesn't already know. He said the US would be getting the car in 2008 (I think he said summer) and that they'd be racing the car in Super GT. Personally I would've liked to hear them say they were going to race at Le Mans or something.

Good for Nissan. Other than the porky weight one really could not have asked for them to do a much better job.

Eh, all of the Skylines are brutish and not exactly pretty. This one is no different but in person it looks better than the R34.

US Spec GTR will start at $69,850. Not too bad.

A rumor we heard at TMS was that somehow you'd be able to download driving data from the GTR to a PS3 with GT5 or vice versa. Something silly like that. I'm like riiiiggghhttt.

From the GTR website:

Driver-configurable performance monitor, developed with Sony® Polyphony, with graphical readouts of vehicle data and driving data displayed on a total of 11 screens.

I guess it just means you'll have screens that look like they're out of GT showing some sort of data. There's a CF card slot in the car too, don't know what that could be for. Maybe music? *shrugs*

Comes standard with Navi apparently *thumbup*

Overall not a bad bargain. Not my kind of car really but pretty cool.

How can a car with less HP's and weighs more gets comparable times? Nissan couldn't possible under rate their motor by that much, right? Maybe the ATTESSA AWD can slow down time with pokemon power.

The 227 HP WRX beats the MS3 in both the 0-60 and the quartermile, despite being down a whopping 40 horsepower and about the same weight.

I'd be more concerned about the weight than down 20hp which is almost negligible. To have gearing in there to make up for 700 lbs, i'm guessing the cars topend must be quite a bit lower than the vettes.
