Someone PLEASE make an alumni section. Not to restrict any one or any group, but so you can have posts about yourselves...like, "RJs thread" and "Kaan's thread" and give a little rundown about you and MM, cause incoming members are going to be clueless as to who you are. If you want to clear any lies or BS talk about you, this is the way to do it.

About the campus events forum, well, it was partly created to cut down on the off-topicness of our subjects. The idea was that we didn't want our Scenic Drive thread to turn into a discussion of Enron or which size of marshmallow is better. I don't know....I think its useful, and I'm sure that if you were a student you'd agree. Theres two sides to a fence I guess.

I hope none of you are developing grudges against students over all of this, because you'd just be damaging the relationship between OGs and students that you apparently want. Saying "oh I don't care anymore i'll just bring friends to fill up the party" doesn't inspire the need to support your MM wishes. I really hope some of us come to the Chili event and others

yeah exactly that. I have actually tried to post in there already knowing the restrictions but just momentarily forgot, and got frustrated when I got a "you're not authorized to post here" message.

I dont want to make a damn thread about me, I want the students to come to the track/autox/chili cookoff/g-force kart events/campus events/etc and we can all get to know each other.

we dont need a seperate thread. none of us will know each other if we're not allowed to mingle with each other. if the board gets too off topic, thats where moderators come in and delete the useless posts. i am seriously clueless as to how you guys created a students only forum to create bonds between students and OGs. it feels like i'm taking crazy pills here

I agree, that a website is not a good way for current students to meet alumni. IMO it's a good place for current students and alumni to SET UP meets (like the Chili Cook Off, MM partay, etc.) to meet each other in person.

I still firmly believe that the internet is a good place to search for information (both good and bad), but definitely not the best place to meet and get the feel for people.

What I'm curious about though, is why is this whole thing becoming an issue now? We have never had this problem since I became a member almost two years ago.

I mean it takes the students WANTING to come, wanting to meet people, and wanting to learn what MM once was. Not having a car is no excuse for not coming out. I honestly don't know how we could garner enthusiasm, maybe some alumni showing up to a meeting during the semester? Do you guys still do the car presentations at meetings? What is the focus at the meetings and where in general to people's interests lie?

I get that, I never meant it to sound like I wanted the alumni section to replace students and OGs meeting each other at the track. I was just thinking that if a new student hears the name Jay Ray or Gerald, they could read up about your experience with MM. It would help them recognize that you're an important member. Just an idea, thats all

Not to sound like a dick, but I don't think thats what the Campus Events forum was for. Its just for announcing local events that pertain to MM. I never saw any division created from it until some of you felt it was dividing MM. I don't see why you can't post in it if the topics are kept ON topic...if you could would you accept it?

I think it would be cool if some of you showed up to meetings if you can. Some of you have more track experience then others so who better to talk about attending track events than you? Overall I think we can do a better job of getting students and OGs together, but more than that we have to actually do what we say and stick to it. Again I'm hoping we can work some stuff out this year to get people more involved...I personally had a blast last year just from the meetings and social events and ride alongs I got, but if you think more can be done then that just means more fun :o

i'll do my best to not be redundant here. this is more for the current members than the alum.

one thing that must be understood is that the MM alumni, on the whole, are fiercely loyal and look at MM as not only a club but a living memory and a major success story. when i was but a youngin, and just joined MM back in '01, i think we had maybe 20 some people as members? now we have like 3 or 4 times that, a nice website, and hundreds of people registered to our forum. it's hard to watch something you built change under the direction of others, be it good or bad. what i mean to say is that for those who are current students - n00bs if you will - should not be put off by what seems to be a flood of words (sometimes critical) coming from the old guys. we care. i care. i speak for many when i say that i plan to support MM til i die from boost rot.

this plays into the idea of getting to know the alum, and what others have said better than i can. if there is a rift in the communication, or words are said that come across harshly, its because all this is happening in large part because the club is spread out and noboby really know who's talking. nothing beats talking and having a good time face to face. there's no replacement for a handshake, or helping someone wrench on their car. i hope we can all chill more often, it really helps (i mean that for both studs and alum) and yeah i'll say it too....let everyone post in campus events or kill it off....it would be cool if alumni could post just to give a heads up or something.

as for participation in motorsports and club activities....well i love seeing people rocking out at parties, working on cars together, whatever. that's been going on for years in MM, and it fosters some real tight bonds. what's hard to get over from the alum's standpoint though, is that we had regular attendance at all kinds of events, year round. you could count on nearly 3-4 current students (at least) being at almost every thing in the events section. it seems that kind of drive is no longer there.

before you current officers and members flame me hard, let me say that i do understand in many ways why things are how they are. honestly i do. we took a big hit in May when many really involved students graduated. from a once-officer's standpoint i understand the difficulties that officers face. that said, every cabinet of officers through the years has had unique challenges. as for you students that aren't sure what you're getting into with this club -- ask! there's alot to learn and alot to see but nobody here will push you away. and if getting up really early and driving far to participate/see an event is too daunting a task to handle, then i really hope we can change your mind. i live in freaking GA, the last place i thought i'd be. you can be damned sure if i was back in VA i'd be at some meeting and know many of you personally.

in closing....we all love cars. it comes with the territory. but it's the thrill of the hunt, the urge to build yourself and your machine to go faster, better, safer and the commaradarie that comes as a by product of being part of a unique group of focused students that makes MM stand alone as a college club for what we hope will be many years to come.

the campus events was creating a student division of MM. how can that not be construed as creating a division. it was essentially the definition of divide.

i've said before that the forum just needs moderation. there's no point in having a seperate campus events forum if things stay on topic. i'll admit that i've done my fair share of thread jacking, but show me someone who hasnt. if we moderate reasonably, then we shouldnt have a problem.

Well, if it means anything, nobody got together and said "Hey, lets block out the Alumni, yeah that'll be fun". We merely wanted our own space to discuss things that current students could easily access and read. You guys have get togethers all the time up in Nova that we can't go to, not because we're not invited but because its two hours away and perhaps may not be feasible for certain times...how is this any different? Just as an example, not to put anything against you but you are relatively close in Charlottesville, and when we posted up scenic drives in the regular events forum you didn't show, so whats the deal? Would others come 2 hours to hange out at a P-Run house? It would be of course cool if you did, but would you?

Well, if this forum hasn't had moderation since its beginning, then I doubt it'll start now, and I wouldn't want it to. Nobody likes nazi moderators  the forum attitude is largely a great environment
