fun fact - these 15x5 wheels feel heavier than the 16x6.5's on my subaru. total boat anchors. don't care but its pretty interesting have much all that steel adds up on what looks like a tiny wheel.

that's intriguing but i have zero experience with that stuff. i'll see how the chrome trim looks first. i've got a talent for screwing things up after they're already good enough.

On a tire, you'd want to run a tape line on the outside and maybe on the rim side too depending on where you want the whitewall. Then spray a bunch of coats (at the bare minimum 5 but probably 7 or 8 since it's a tire), maybe even use a black base (to prevent the white dying the rubber although i don't think it's an issue anymore)

Then just be sure to peel your tape after your last wet coat.

If you're committed to white walls, have you looked for tire paint? Like those markers but a bigger version?

those trailers are dope as hell but...i can't imagine why you'd need one if you're not pulling it behind a serious overlanding rig.

then again, there are needs and then there are wants....

Garrett has a bunch of experience living in those types of rooftop tents from his jeep adventures. from what i've heard they're pretty amazing.

if you're offroading, it gives you the ability to quickly set up and not care about ground terrain as long as the vehicle's level. pretty convenient. in some areas its a legit safety measure to keep distance from large animals/predators as well.

if you're going to any civilized campground with one you're doing it wrong...it would be like showing up to an autocross with your track suit on

Yeah, most places you're wheeling at don't have good spots to actually set up a tent once you have your truck parked. This also lets you stay close to your stuff (ARB Coolers, weapons, power supplies) and they're super easy to set up and take down and obviously easy to store as well. You don't have to worry about getting wet or dirty either and you always have a nice solid foundation under the tent. A RRT on the back of a Tacoma with a bed rack welded on essentially negates the need for a trailer like Scotty is building.

Seems like a lighter footprint alternative if you don't need your bed to hold a bunch of wheeling stuff, or can pack light and keep most of what you need in your cabin:

Taylor pretty much nailed it all. But for the three month trip I did it made sense. Setup took a few minutes. During downpours not a drop came in and we stayed plenty dry. Additionally being off the ground away from mud/dirt, etc was nice. It's far more comfy than a tent (trust me).

Ford flex turbo burrito with a pop up tent in the roof would be awesome. But so would a sprinter/promaster adventure-ized but those dont have ecob00sty. Or a vintage airstream. Or.... fuck.

These have the possibility to suck really hard top sleep in if you're a normal size human being unless you're carrying exactly nothing in the bed. Water also tends to pool up in the bed under the tent, which doesn't happen with a RTT.

I was at a Toyota event 4 years ago and drove some guys Tacoma with one of these popped in the back. It was pretty comical, especially when he came sprinting after me when he realized he had $200 worth of whiskey on the tailgate and he had let a 17 year old take his 6 speed for a spin.

so, minor update. STILL waiting on the birch sheets in Atlanta, the retailer got 8 of 11 sheets in and now they can't get the remainder from their vendor so they're trying to find someone else on the fly. so dumb...if i don't hear anything by the end of this week i'll see if i can grab the remaining 3 sheets from someone else in town while i'm out there so i can get everything and be done with the trip.

did a big home depot run this weekend for all the material for the floor. carriage bolts w/nuts, poplar 1x3's for the frame, 1/4" ply for the underside, and 3/4" foam insulation sheet for the interior of the floor sandwich construction. the stack of 1/2" used oak flooring planks will go on the top surface and that will be the actual floor we touch inside the cabin.

the poplar frame is together with pocket holes and glue, and next step is cutting up the 2 4x8 ply sheets into a set of 5x4's to create the total 5x8 footprint. then glue/nail, insert insulation, apply oak flooring and bolt to the frame. we're going to build a hidden under-floor storage compartment into the floor too so i'll need to cut that area out of the structure with a router and then built the actual box for the storage compartment. it'l be about 40w x 18h x 10d...i don't want the compartment hanging any lower than the axle. that will give us a secure place to hide fishing equipment, extra blankets, small electronics like chargers and a weather radio, and emergency gear that we don't access all the time so normal luggage storage won't be used up unnecessarily .

I think those are a tad better. For that you don't give up your roof space. Unless you're getting a hard shell tent that has Rails you pretty much lose half if not more of the roof. With the built in pop tops you obviously have to cut and build (for most a custom) setup. Pretty popular on defender 110s. Old land cruisers and ovisouldy the westy's.
