Note to self: Filling the coolant reservoir on these trucks is down right stupid. Once you hit the "min" line you have to fill it at a snails pace so it doesn't overflow as coolant sits right at the cap. The tank is split into a smaller one and large overflow one. The cap splits these and the "min" line is on the smaller tank. at the very top by the cap. Coolant doesn't start moving over to the larger tank until it reaches that min line and can go over the huge wall between the two tanks. I was literally standing there for a 20 minutes trying to not spill and fill it all the way to the cold start level......

Why are you filling the coolant reservoir? Are you leaking?

If you read about trailer tires and talk to trailer tire dealers (the one's who actually know what they are talking about), 60mph is max speed for trailer tires.

Nope, it was right below the min line on cold start. Nothing under the truck or smell of the coolant. Doubt the truck has been filled since is was out of the dealer so 60k miles and 5 years will slowly drink it down.

Didn't even know that. Some people who tow then drive way too fast I see on the road...

Not that anyone listens to that

Seriously, don't go more than 70mph on those tires and even that is stretching it.

I've towed at 70 since buying my trailer (and immediately putting new tires on it) but hesitate to go much faster beyond a brief burst of speed to pass someone (very rarely, really). New tires every 2-3 years and avoiding overloading the axles helps with general trailer problems while on the go, but yeah, watch your speed.

Yes they do, then lots of them complain about the amount of blowouts they have had. Phil from Phil's tire and I had a long talk about trailer tires and speed one night at VIR.

Upgrading to radial trailer tires has been great for me.

With my new enclosed I usually don't go above 60.

I bought my trailer with the biggest tires I could find after dealing with dinky 14/15 inchers on my previous enclosed. My trailer tires dont even get warm after a 5 hour tow anymore and I always tow between 65-70.

My old enclosed with 14/15inch tires? Had to keep it below 65.

For real, thank you for letting me know about trailer tire speed ratings. Had no idea this was a thing due to the fact some asshats tow at obscene speeds. After doing some research I've learned a lot about them. I guess I'll for sure be checking over a UHaul trailer if I ever rent one again if I don't have one by March Madness next season

Well.... here we go. I think I have a coolant leak. My coolant has dropped a quarter inch since I've filled it. And this was checked while the engine was cold. Seems like a very common thing on these trucks to have a mystery coolant leak. 60k miles. 5 years old. It's crazy that this thing already leaks this shit. Going to check oil level and color/smell when I get home just to be safe. Doubt it's the head gasket. I believe it's going to be a lower hose or the actual plastic tank itself is leaking. Sigh.

Pro-tip: Next time call Uhaul's roadside assistance number as you leave the rental place (because honestly they don't give a remote shit about the condition of what they are renting), give them your home address as your "stranded" location, drive home and continue to load and pack until they show up to change the tire.

Would the coolant tank fall under the Powertrain warranty?

Passed the warranty time

Also, "Exclusions: Excluded from the powertrain coverage are sensors, wiring, connectors, engine radiator, coolant hoses, coolant, and heater core. Coverage on the engine cooling system begins at the inlet to the water pump and ends with the thermostat housing and/or outlet that attaches to the return hose. "

Your MY had 5yr/100k powertrain per googles. Long shot but it might be worth a try, dealer may surprise you especially since you just bought the truck from them.

So, my plans are to just start with the cap even though signs don't really point to that being it. It doesn't seem like a hose is leaking from when I've touched them. If it isn't the cap then probably Tstat which I'll just get the dealer to fix.

Finally, the leak showed itself. I ordered a new cap even though I think it may be a thermostat not working properly. I'm hoping it's just a bad cap though. Took me awhile to read through a bunch of forums to narrow it down and was lucky enough to finally see it... cap will be here Sunday.

Here's hoping!

I haaaate tracking down coolant leaks. Why do you think it'd be a busted thermostat, is the truck running warm or cold? Unless you see it leaking at the housing, I'm not sure where that theory has any ground.

That leak at the cap is pretty telling, I'd replace it and just see how things go for another week.

Forums said they had same issue and the thermostat wasn't opening/closing properly so pressure was inconsistent in the cooling system. Fixed their issue by replacing it, idk.

My truck runs fine. Warms up fine. Temps fluctuate between 210 and 200. That seems normal though. Truck runs heat perfectly fine. It just doesn't make sense that the cap itself is bad besides the leak. I'm just thinking the system is over pressurized which is a whole other issue. We shall see on Sunday once I drive around with the new cap though. Hoping I'm just over thinking it based on reading so many different things on forums and no one having a concrete answer that works.

Ahh, gotcha. That would make sense, if it over-pressurizes a little bit then maybe it's venting out the cap. Sounds very BMW-esque Wink

Given you say it warms up and has heat all within normal timing, I would suspect it's just the cap to start. I feel like a bad thermostat would make itself more evident in fluctuating engine temp, which you say isn't really happening outside of normal values.
