All good points, but just for reference, this is what I consider imperfect paint needing work  (took this 10 mins ago)

If you dont have a buffer, I have 2 so you're more than welcome to borrow one and I'd be happy to lend a hand or supplies if you need any. It might not even be a bad idea to spend the 100-150 bucks for a professional job and just have him do paint correction for you.

I will definitely take you up on that. Beer shall be provided.

Where's the problem? Car looks great. If its that bad sell it to me

As for proper detail, it will cost you more than $150, but far less than any paint work. A respray is A TON of work. Bumper covers are relatively easy but the whole car is a can of worms.

...........I would have smacked with you if I still lived with you and heard about this "paint" idea Tongue.

But for reals, you said you want to get on track with it, dont DARE paint anything before you take it out on track. A good paint job is 3-5k like Scotty said, thats more than 2 years of entry fees if you went to every single NASA event. And think how much more fun and memories youll get thatll last a lifetime. A new paintjob might not even last those same 2 years looking the same. Save the money and slush it away towards a TT supra fund.

+1.

If you know that you are only going to keep the Miata for a limited amount of time and eventually buy a Supra just enjoy the Miata as it is. You won't get any of your money back for the mods/paint work you do to the Miata. That's money that could be spent buying your MKIV.

Yeah, this has always been the biggest detriment to the paint job idea I've had almost since buying the car. Honestly if its anyway possible I'd like to keep this car and buy a MKIV, but who knows, maybe I'll just enjoy it until then. I want to keep a light, simple, inexpensive RWD car in the stable and I honestly wouldn't want anything other than what I have now, so it'd pain me to part with it.

Realistically the only mods I want to do are:
- New Bilstein HD's
- Eibach Pro-Plus kit (springs + sways)
- Racing Beat endlinks
- RB header/quiet exhaust
- Pads/rotors/lines/high temp fluid
- Sticky tires

Dream mod:
- Flyin' Miata Eaton M62 s/c

I took it to Premier Autobody today to get some headlight polishing done and a quote for hood/fenders/bumper cover and it was 780 all said and done. If I choose to do any paint work this is more than likely the route I would take.

Unless you paint the whole car ull regret it....no matter what they say, can't perfectly match the paint. Which will drive you even crazier. That 800 is ur suspension right there.

Eh, the car has already had paintwork done (previous owner hit Bambi) and I honestly can't tell, like Adam said, I didn't know he had sections done until he posted it up a few posts ago. As long as it gets rid of all the chips, I'd be happy.

Now, if I was a baller not on a budget, I'd get any car I wanted painted stripped to a bare shell, carpets up, motor out before paint.

I say it's not worth it on a DD car. You'll be happy until a year from now you have paint chips again. Also, 780 sounds cheap, and you get what you pay for when it comes to paint jobs.

I don't (currently) DD this car, and

780 could be suspect, i would be wary. make sure they're trustworthy or you feel OK with the owner and his staff.

i would know too, just got my car back from the paint shop for the second time after dealing with my hood damage from months ago. the first spray looked like ass so i made them do it again. the estimate was right around 750.[*]

You also gotta think about it like this. Its a car and a DD. You dont want your DD to be perfect. From what I can tell its a very nice car overall. If you spend all kinds of money to make it perfect then you will be scared to drive it. And thats simply no fun. The paint job on my gti would have been around 6k. On the drive home from Texas I got a few rock chips and I was totally ok with that. I didnt want the car to be perfect cause then Id be scared to cause any flaws. Also you gotta think. Its a damn miata. Spend money on things that will make the car more fun. Dont waste money of making the paint flawless.

PS that clear bra stuff sucks and looks like total shit anyways. Never do that.

sure. I had that choice with a few freshly painted cars and alway went with rock chips instead of clear bra junk.

That's my reasoning too. Mine cleans up reasonably well, but I know it's a 15-year-old car. I just acquired a dent in my passenger fender that is the size of a 4-year-old's head. I pulled some of it out so it's smaller but it's still there. I would mind more if the rest of the car was perfect, but it's not. There's some paint shit and some other little dings. I want the big dent pulled, but it's not keeping me up at night either.

Your car is gorgeous enough as it is, just keep taking care of it as you do and call it a day.

+ Eleventeebajillion. I found some serious chips in the front end of the m3 and thought very briefly to get it repainted, and then I was like wtf, first time I got on the highway with any freshly painted bumpers ive ever had got wrecked. And what do you think youll be using as a daily once you get out of college? And dont even think about the track if youve got a freshly painted car.

Nobody notices chips and dings when your flying past them on track.
