Does anyone here own/has experience with the HK USP .45? I really want to get my hands on one of those and try one out. My favorite pistol yet would be the G22 .45.

Mike, I'm not sure I would go with the factory refurbished piece, just because I like supporting my local gun store, and at least at VA arms they stand by what they sell. (Or at least they say they do, the only problem I ever had with the handgun I bought there was me putting it together wrong).

And John, here's my theory:

If you practice with your gun you'll be able to put accurately put rounds into a target without hesitation. If your gun is uncomfortable to fire, you won't practice with it.

Now, like kaan said 9mm is definitely "good enough" for self defense, assuming you get a heavy, expanding round. And the PRC law does say that

The occupant may use a firearm when resisting the intruderÔÇÖs attempt to commit a forcible and life-threatening crime against anyone in the home provided that a reasonable person in the same or similar situation would believe that (a) the intruder intends to commit a forcible and life-threatening crime; (b) there is imminent danger of such crime being accomplished; and © the occupant acts under the belief that use of a firearm is necessary to save himself or herself or another from death or great bodily injury. Murder, mayhem, rape, and robbery are examples of forcible and life-threatening crimes.

Of course, maybe these people are talking about "one shot" because you only get 10 if you live in California. I'd say if you have a 9mm and you're worried about stopping power, just practice double tapping.

You touch on a very good point. We do need to find something that'll be comfortable for her as well - and we do plan on taking a safety course and practicing at the range.

There have been a lot of gang initiation activities as of late in the area - and they love to break-in and rape random people. My co-worker's g/f was attacked last weekend in her own home - thankfully her screaming was enough of a deterent, which usually isn't the case.

Thats' really most important. I hate shooting Rex's gun. Its too big for my tiny little hands. However, because Kaan and I have similiarly sized hands (sorry small turkish man) his gun is much more comfortable. I like to go to the gun shows as well, because I can hold as many guns as possible to find out what I like. We haven't bought a gun for me yet, but when we do, we are going to make damn sure that I am comfortable with it.

Mike, at the risk of dragging this further off topic (I think there was a topic?), the two 9mm I know of that come well recommended are the Ruger P95 (lighter weight since it's a composite grip) and the S&W 6906 or shorter 6904, both of which are heavier but all steel and will last forever. They all go for ~$400 on gunbroker.com, Town Gun in Martinsville has new P95s for ~$325 and some excellent condition police trade-in 6906s for about the same price.

I did what Rex suggested and went to a gun store (except I did look at price, thats retarded not to) and I actually like the P95 the best. It also has a real saftey (big plus for me) and its cheap.
I plan on buying one whenever I get a chance to get to the DMV and get my driv. license address straightened out.

my buddy had the .45, and all I can say is that it's fucking huge. That's the main reason for going for the 9 version. It's a good gun, and good for the nightstand, but not for carrying really.

Interesting you all mention 9mm's - most of the self-defense fanatics I know say to stay away from them as they are much less likely to stop a determined intruder. Plus out here in CA, you really only have one shot (in the eyes of the law to fall under the purview of "self-defense") - so you better make that one shot a good one that'll take out your intruder for good (no way for them to pursue a lawsuit against you).

My dads a cop and swears by glocks. Thats the only pistol I really feel comfortable with although Ive probably only shot a glock on 6-7 different occasions (glock 36 5/6+1 .45). Im far from a great shot but I guess Im decent.

My favorite gun to shoot is the m4 but thats my dads baby so he doesnt like to take it out shooting since its apparently a pain in the ass to clean. Only gun I know how to clean is our ak47 and sks(easy because they are basically the game gun) and glock 36 (super easy) so those are normally what I shoot. Cheap but gets the job done.
