Whether or not this crash/recession is solved or not solved by socialism, I, and many of my friends/coworkers, are preparing for this all to go down. It appears our government is preparing as well. Is this really going to happen? Thoughts? On top of places running out of gas and the struggling market, I just found out about another big log on the fire:
A quick synopsis of the "Martial Law" mission:

So, I bought another handgun last night. The $500 I normally deposit into savings/market each month is in my pocket instead. Heck, I can't get any rate of return on it anyway. Next month's is going to buy more ammo/food/fuel, resources that we'll use either way and have some real value, apocalypse or not.
So.... is this crazy? A little preparation can't hurt, right?
How come many people I know here are doing the same thing?
How about you? :dunno:

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
SRSLY? The more people buy into this BS, the worse it's going to get. Nothing like a little mass hysteria to lighten the mood, eh?
This could get interesting

I guess I don't see how wanting to have a few weeks worth of supplies just in case anything (man-made or natural disasters) happens, trying to avoid being one of the first group of huddled masses (zombies?) huddled in the civic center, waiting for the government to rescue me is "contributing to the problem". I'm not selling everything, pulling all my $$ out and building a bomb shelter, I'm just taking a very small fraction of our $ and doing what I need to make me feel like a responsible human being.
And it's even easier to justify now. Saving $ in a bank is stupid, the interest rate is lower than inflation rate. And I can't count on making any $ in short term investments now. So I'll keep it. Better yet, I'll buy things that I use anyway and whose cost does and will continue to go up, economy good or bad. It's a better investment.
HAULN-SS Wrote:Your first mistake was not already having your guns, you know..haha. Exactly. Some people were already smart enough (paranoid enough?) to have figured this out and have been "prepared" to some degree for their whole lives. I feel silly for not having figured it out earlier, but hey, now seems like a good a time as any to correct my mistake.
I don't want to be the one holding the bag if this all does go down, the government cashes out, the rich people in the know cash out, and we're standing here with nothing. That's bullshit. We're supposed to be the ones in control dammit! We're spending all our money "spreading democracy" while socialism creeps in to our own country. China is laughing it's ass off right now. Oh, and they're not lending to us anymore. Oh, and another bank folded last night.
Did everyone get notice in the mail about the great depression? Lots of time to prepare? I just wonder if we're ignoring the the few signs we might get.

If the economy really crashes there's no 'cashing out'. We're fucked. The people with large guns are now in charge.
I'm not losing any sleep over this mess. If it really hits the fan I can go to south america.

Really Channing, you only need enough ammo to break into wal mart and loot the rest if the SHTF.
Also, maybe it's a typo and we're really getting Martian Law. That'd be sweet.

Other than the media frenzy I can't really say I feel affected by any of this. I rent, don't have a huge stock portfolio and don't have enough money in the bank to worry about losing it :dunno:

But you might be able to see how homeowners with family and savings and some hope of retirement, based on what they THOUGHT were sound investments might be!
