Actually, I read the article on autoweek about 4 minutes after it was posted. I just forgot, and didnt want to re-read.

That 135 is going to be a quick little bastard, and I really want to drive it. Right now.

No shit!
I just really wish it were a Hatchback. But let's be honest, I'm not buying one, so...

Why would BMW make cars in lesser series that would keep up with their top of the line M series cars? I think the author was being a little optimistic as to how truly fast it's going to be. Potential to be fast? Yeah, but I bet they detune that engine for that model and leave it up to the aftermarket to make it a real power player.

Because it...wont' be?
But still, the same could be said for Mazda. The Speed3 is faster than their "flagship" RX-8...but it's a totally different character.

Well with a chip and exhaust a guy I know who owns a dyno shop was saying the 335i puts out 360 whp and 400 ft-lbs of torque. That'd be more than enough for a 135 to take down an M3. Of course that's getting into that whole silly modified vs stock argument but still. Intriguing.

Of course that's getting into that whole silly modified vs stock argument but still. Intriguing. That's exactly my point. When you get the aftermarket involved, it would be understandable for a twin-turbocharged car to put down more power than its bigger brother. If you drop a couple grand into a WRX, you can make it faster than a stock STi. But, from the factory, it just does not make sense from a marketing standpoint to have your lowest series of car be able to outperform a car that is supposed to be the pinnacle of performance for your brand (during the same MY).
The Mazda example was a good one. It just shows how much of a joke the RX-8 turned out to be power / performance wise for a flagship car. If Mazda had stuck with a boosted platform like the RX-7, the tables would probably be turned on the Mazdaspeed. I bet the Mazdaspeeds are leaving the lots a lot faster than the RX-8 right now.

Eh, Mazda had enough trouble with the reliability of the Renesis engine as is. Had it been turbocharged it is pretty likely that it would have been an unmitigated disaster.

Have you guys read that the 135i won't have a limited slip? It's a brake based traction control system which should eat up pads like a mofo on track.
Two feet.
i'm curious about pricing...

There's already plans for a Quaife LSD for the 1 series to be available as soon as the first cars are sold. Of course, this would cost you an extra $1500.

I heard the 135 will be over 30.. I don't know ho legitimate that is, though.
I'm curious about the entry level 1 (128?) pricing.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

how the shit did they come to the conclusion that this was an intelligent decision?! honestly, you put that kind of power in a car that size and the people at BMW don't want to put in an LSD? great googly moogly.
the only thing i can think of is that the LSD would fight the traction control system?

IIRC, no Non-M BMW has come with an LSD since 1993? LSD's don't "fight" the traction control, my 3 has both a pretty sophisticated traction control system AND a limited slip differential. No, the truth his that throttle programming is "free" and ABS already has the sensors, so why not traction control instead of an LSD? Differentials are expensive, and the average person isn't going to miss it.

i guess i was just looking at the 1 series as being more high performance oriented than its meant to be. i saw the twin turbos and got all hot and bothered.....

Why wouldn't they put an engine that was as well engineered and power-ready as the one in the Mazdaspeed into the RX-8? That car looks fantastic in my opinion, but I would never purchase one because of its engine reliability, lack of power, and poor gas mileage coupled with its lack of power. From what I've heard, it does everything else right.
