On the next big sell-off (look for 2 days of 200+ pt drops) pick up some GIS or WMT if you want a consumer goods/retailer, drug stocks (PFE and BMY are my favorites), or a good diversified energy stock (Duke or Dominion are prob good choices). If you want a bank, look at BAC, JPM, GS, or WFC; they're the only names I'd even begin to trust in that area.

I'm also picking up CAT shares whenever they are beaten down and I have some cash idling. I'd also get some AAPL if you believe in the company b/c their shares are way down.

FYI: I am forbidden from investing in bank, comm, or energy stocks b/c of my job and therefore don't research them to invest; don't buy blindly based on a name, do the research on the company's books.

awww.... sell? I picked it up as a long term... but I guess I can't say no to that return in a day. Maybe I'll buy again later.

And I would buy some more apple.... but I've already doubled down on them once.... and have a long way to climb back to that point! :oops:

That's why I went with BP, they do have BP Solar, AND just teamed up with JA Solar, so I figure they've got a little more going on than just oil.

Yeah, it's a really nice intra-day graph, but that area of the market is just too unpredictable if you ask me. Channing had an opportunity to sell a stock and realize a 10% gain in two days and given the market's current volatility, if he can hold that cash for a week or two he can reinvest at the same price or lower and get some free money out of this to hold for the long haul. I'm assuming he's using a discount trader and has very low margins, and he's obviously done the research and likes the company, so I just look at it as a way to play the market's volatility and make some extra $$.

Nobody has to act on anything I recommend, I don't run an investment company and certainly don't claim to be all-knowing. I just put my 2 cents in to encourage people to give up their own ideas.
FWIW, I sold off one of my favorite stocks for a handsome profit today and plan to do exactly what I recommend to Channing, buy it back at same price as I did before, except now I can buy more thanks to today's gains.

fortunately the market rallied today. So my 2009 YTD numbers look GREAT!

yeah... the 401k went down over last year despite putting 10k in it.

on the other hand, i started playing with the market in november... i'm up 40% total on my investments there unfortunately, i'm only dicking around with 5k (aside from what I have in AAPL, which isn't really dicking around, but what I thought was going to be a good long-term play), so the profit isn't too huge, but it's nothing to balk at.

my picks:
SAY - picked up at 5 after they announced a wild buy of another company (was at 13 the day before), next day they retracted that statement, went to 9, sat around 9 for a few days, sold at 8.50. was just in for the quick buck.
UEPS - read a lot of good things about this company. thinking of holding for a while. bought at 9, now at 14. profitable, good business to be in.
FNXMF.PK - basically a nickel and silver mining company. those metals were way down. saw a nice jump the other day when nickel prices went up. their 52-high is something like 35, but i got in at 2. they're now at 3.50.
YGE - Solar panel parts manufacturer in China. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Solar stock recently took a MAJOR dump so this was cheap. They're #1 in China and add big new deals every few weeks... I think they're gonna be doing well for a while. Bought at 5, now at 7.50.
AAPL - I bought some just before the market crash, which hurt. I tripled up at 88. Trying to unload it all as soon as it makes financial sense. I think I need to accept loss...

Then there is SRZ, Caitlin's company. Was down to like .20 a few weeks ago, but I know what's going on there and it's ugly. Regardless, it's pretty stable around 1.60 right now. I wish I had thrown a few bucks in. DAMNIT.

Materials is the place to be right now. If you look at most of their P/E Ratios, they're all pretty much bargains. Even if the stock doesn't pop (and a lot of them have), you're going to get solid earnings for relatively cheap.

Check AA. It popped at the end of the year but P/E is still below 6 and it pays dividends every quarter.

I'm sorry. My stocks rallied. Yours may not have and the S&P 500 or other indices may not.

do you use the CAPS forums?
ive been really really dissapointed with fool.com over the past couple years. All they do is try to sell their newsletter anymore. (The exact likes of which they used to criticize back in their .com boom days)

Yeah, I do a lot of reading in the CAPS stuff. My basic equation for buying is it's a 5-star CAPS, has a low P/E, low debt, and in something I feel good about (a market that I feel is undervalued) or believe in... I should probably learn a bit more, but I'm doing really well against the market the past few months.

SRZ is up 18% today... someone must know something.
My nickel miners are also up another 20%
