Dammit, I'm out :-)
I think Chan has a very good idea of not getting out into some remote territory. Yeah, it sounds great to go to Alaska or some other exotic, totally different area, but then you're not only dealing with a zombie threat but you're also learning a new peice of land and climate, which could be a huge disadvantage (I'm definitely not headed North).
I think my house would actually serve as a very good outpost, although I would prefer more wide-open space and better soil. Things I would look for when setting up a residence:
-large amounts of open land. This allows you to recognize impending threats before they're at your front door.
-escape routes. Unfortuneately, this could be easily defeated if you have open territory and a very large, well-organized zombie attack force.
-altitude/elevation: this could be a large aid in above considerations
-easily defendable: ideal would be a riverfront home with dock. getting attacked from the front would be only real option and would thus be easier to defend (zombies won't be traversing the waterways) finding a military outpost could provide Lee his land mines, though these would mostly be a warning for yourself and would probably take out very few zombies
-multiple chain link fences will provide a delay to the zombie horde and they don't have the mind to cut holes, but by sheer number they will eventually push it over or amble around until they find a hole.
-I really like the industrial setting b/c the walls aren't easily scaleable like a house would be. Unfortuneately, I think this might kill most of my other requirements.
-good soil would be a big plus if you plan to set up permanent residence there
I'd also consider setting up at a small island that would provide fairly quick access to the mainland. Clarkson has proven that attaching an outboard motor to my Toyota truck makes it a fairly sea-worthy automobile :-).
M16 for longer range, MP5 to keep on my boat when I got there. Shotgun as a general purpose weapon. I'd only have to carry enough ammo to get me to where I was going, and after that, all those rounds are easily found (NATO rounds are going to be the most common, i'm guessing). The grenade launcher is actually more for keeping off people that aren't zombies off my boat trying to float up in a raft or something.

dude, if people have survived long enough to make it close enough to board your mighty yacht of impenetrable salvos of ammunition, they might be smart enough that you'd want to ally with them.

Srsly. I mean, after your hajj to your magic boat fortress is complete, you're right, yay guns, I'd have a bunch too.
But on the way there? Yeah, uhm, you're zombie chow.

I wonder how many zombies you can kill on one chainsaw tank of gas. Someone write Mythbusters please.
Based on Dave's requirements for land, I think I've decided to head for some Virginia plantation or something. I have yet to research which has the least number of trees and sits highest on a hill but I'm sure there's one to meet the requirements.

I dunno man..for like 3 years at least, space and food are going to pull a premium. I mean, Im presuming that at least some friends would be on the boat with me, so i don't know about taking on strangers.

Not to mention the fact you're going to need to either leave the saw idling (thus giving your position away to every zombie near you) or, uh, pull start it when you see a zombie.
I can just picture scotty, one foot on the saw, one hand furiously yanking the pullstart.

All I'm saying is that if there are humans alive, why in god's name would you kill them if there is still a zombie threat? I mean, yeah, they might eventually become zombies if you don't kill them, but they might end up being a great help to you.
Or you could eat them. Gotta have some protein to stay alive.

Oh c'mon, 3 guns is not that unreasonable. Two strapped to your back and carrying one, and a bungie corded ammo box on your dirtbike and you're good to go. I'm sure if you managed to deplete that ammo, there are at least 100 gun shops on the way to the hudson bay from here. Beside, if you're on a dirt bike, hopefully you're not actually having to use much of the ammo, because you'll be driving through rougher, less populated terrain.

Thank you for putting my requirements to words. That would be perfect. Not to mention that you know the ground is fertile b/c it supported our region for years when we first came to the country.
In all fairness to Scotty, guns aren't nearly as cool looking as this.

Well, I guess I could make a judgement call. If they float up in a medium sized boat, then I know they've got their shit together, and maybe we can latch boats up or something. (Think about the giant raft in Snow Crash, if you've read that). If it's a small boat, or raft, or swimming..no chance.

Have you ever gone hunting before?
Three guns is reasonable if you have a reasonable purpose for one, but your guns cross-purpose serve.
I mean, what can the MP5 do that an AR can't do, only better? And then you're going to carry it, AND enough ammo to last you to the goddamn HUDSON?
I stand by my zombie chow. Convince me that the MP5 is worth carrying, because I think it isn't. All the weight and bulk of a rifle, with the stopping power of a pistol. Yay.

I am obviously going to need to board the boat when I get there, and without fact checking, i'd say this is the most common weapon used for boarding, is it not?
Edit: And yes, I have pheasant hunted quite a bit, and I am quite accurate

The reason I asked the hunting question is that guns are heavy. Tromping through the woods with one rifle and just a box of ammo gets tiring after a while, I can't imagine carrying three.
And your boarding question is dumb. You're going to carry a gun and ammo a couple of hundred miles to use because it's the best for *boarding*?
What about what's best for *killing zombies* since that's what we're talking about, not you stealing a boat.
1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
I have this great vision of Derek going through the woods, stopping every 100 yards to readjust how his weapons are strapped on, stopping to walk back and pick up something that has fallen off, or getting to the Hudson, finding zombies and realizing that all the ammo fell off the bike sometime during the trip.
Mmmmmmm, brains. Derek wins, at least Scotty's going to stick it to the zombies and invoke some blood spattering carnage on his way out.
ok fine, I carry the shotgun and the m16, and strap the MP5 and kitana to the bike, and steal ammo for it when I get there? I still think the MP5 is best for close quarters boarding type situations, and if you can show me a zombie that can take a .40 to the head and get up, I might concede that it's not worth taking. 800 rounds per minute has plenty of zombie stopping power
