The symbolism of white kids hanging nooses from a tree in a racially charged environment is certainly very clear to me and they certainly didnt do it for a history lesson. I think those students should be dealt with (I didnt read too far into the story to see whether they were or not) separately and the retaliation of that by the black students in no way justifies their actions.

the nooses in the tree are being mentioned in articles like it was mentioned by the legal parties. if it is, the defense is on really shitty ground because premeditation can be associated. and it wouldnt take much to get some scared kids to shake on the stand, no matter what kind of prep the defense gives him. thats the biggest issue with the nooses.

Was the motivation for hanging nooses probably wrong... yes... should it have been done... no. The supposed retaliation, the beating, how ever its going to be looked at, shouldnt have happend either.

But this rally is a train wreck. instead of bringing in some NAACP lawyers to get things reduced, they have all these people running their mouths... and the media is running with it all. it might have helped the 6 youth charged with a crime, but it no way helps reduce racial tensions. I bet it increases it.

I guess i understand why the ADL put this together. they wanted to try to crush the "hate" groups. put them in jail for longer and its easier to convict them of felonies (no voting, legal gun owning, etc).

Why in god's name does race have to be in everything. I like everybody the same whether they are black, white, yellow, red, green, whatever. If you turn out to be a peice of shit, I'm not going to hate you any more because of your color.
I don't care enough to read all of the links (see the beginning of my post) but it sounds like this is pretty simple. Six people beating the shit out of somebody is simply attempted murder IF the person feared for his life (pretty hard not to), regardless of whether he was the leader of the kids who put up the nooses. I agree with everyone's sentiments about race. Howver, given the context of rural Louisiana and Jenna's apparent history of racial tension, race is a pertinent factor.

This whole thing started because some black kids sat under the tree that was "understood" to belong to the white kids at that school. Some time later, a group of white kids hung up nooses on that particular tree to let them know how they felt about blacks breaking the "understood" rules. The black kids then retaliated. All parties were under 18. This was a school fight. Period.

The white racists, and they were racists, took it too far and tried to send this kid away for attempted murder.

The black racists aren't trying to solve anything except to up their own profiles.

The media loves these stories because people will process this story through their own set of biases and get all worked up and stay glued to their televisions.

I'd say 6 on 1 is pretty life threatening, and for the attempt there only needs to be the intent plus the overt act in furtherance of the crime.

As for the jury pool, I've read somewhere that of the 150 veniremen (members of the jury pool) who were scheduled to show up for jury duty, only like 50 actually showed up, and none of those that showed up were black (although race is not listed on the jury pool list, at least not here). I suppose the attorneys should have requested another jury pool.
