Right, but for about the same money C5 > GTO, no question. They can be had for $20k and down pretty easily.
'cep for that whole pesky warranty thing.

Rex, a beater probably would be the wisest choice, but we've had this conversation before. I'm not going to drive a car I don't want to drive, seems pointless to me.
As for my intents, sorry I didn't answer you Andy. Most everyone in the club knows me and pretty much knows my intents with a car. The car will be used as a daily driver, but I don't really mind having impractical cars as dailys, that's really all I've ever had, so that isn't a big concern of mine. It does become an inconvenience from time to time and thats why I threw the wrx in there. Aside from that the car will be autocrossed as often as possible, usually 5 or 6 a year. A track day is possible but I haven't found myself as interested in tracking my car as I once was.

Yeah, I know. I miss my Metro.
I loved having a beater. Favorite beater ever: Volvo 940SE Turbo. Oh man it was awesome.
But Thayer, what do you WANT? I mean, you've got alot of different shit up there. I can't really see you in an S2000, and a Vette is still a little expensive, although I know you've got your heart set on them. If you keep an eye out, you maybe could get one, but you'll probably have to borrow a significant dime to get one in a hurry.

while i dont know what thayer's intentions are for the car, i think that a wrx can satisfy the 4x4 redneck in him, can have V8 power with light mods, can handle pretty decently with light mods, has 4 doors for utility and can be a good looking car like a supra.
basically, it's not gonna be as fast a corvette or LS1 camaro, its not gonna be as off-road worthy as a 4x4 truck and its not gonna be pimp like an S2k or supra but it has a little bit of all of those things.
and yes, my opinion is biased

I'm not in a huge hurry to get the car. I can wait out for a deal. I still have my truck I can drive, but I want to keep it at JMU as little as possible. It has a lot of sentimental value and I don't want it dinged up any more than it has to be.

Yes. Yes, it is. The only thing you need to watch for is be sure to do a front seal when changing your t-belt (the turbos are not interference) and make sure your intake manifold gasket is in good shape.
Otherwise, oh man. My 940 was so pimp. Big, comfy, heated leather, and tuuuuurrrrrbooooooooo! Drove it all winter, broke the heater core (long story) and sold it for more than I paid.

Whatever, it was awesome. Turbocharged, seated 5, with enough room in the trunk for 2 dead hookers and a half-k of blow.

I'm sure its kinda of cool in a strange, quirky, utilitarian built-like-a-brick-shithouse way, but I dont think I'd call a 20 year old swedish box 'pimpy' by any stretch of the imagination.

Well, while most aren't, my 940SE had like, 9 way power heated leather seats, here was the interior: (the steering wheel in mine was different, I think)
For a volvo, that's pretty pimp. More pimp than anything I've ever owned. Except maybe the Durango. It's pretty sweet too.
Let's not forget the chrome grill, or IRS, either:

Another biased view... but I think the wrx would be a great middle ground car. They can be had for a great price now, all the mods for the older year cars can be found used or for a great price through the vendors looking to get rid of 'em. They can take quite a bit of abuse if maintained and are practical to drive all year... not to mention the 2.0s are terrific on gas. I don't see many downsides to owning a Subaru except for the 4 door thing, which I love but I know some people don't like.
On the other hand, the Vette is a pretty wonderful car and with 2 already in the family I'd say you have some pretty good experience with what it would be like to own. If you can afford to get a nice Vette, it would be a much easier transition... instead of having to learn a whole new car. Not to mention the smile that was on your face everytime you came through the finish line at the auto-x sideways. Go with what you are most comfortable with, and this truck thing... You need to get out of that.
What about an FD? Shoulda put that on there. I'm afraid it would be too unreliable and I would get frustrated with it.
