"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

many newer engines do great on the 20 weight stuff with the tighter tolerances and trying to cut drag losses for fuel efficiency. mazda knows their way around small engines so i think it'll be just fine for a commuter. if you were towing or running it really hard i'd be tempted to try a thin 30 weight or a robust 20 with good High Temp High Shear protection.
worst case scenario, do yourself a few oil analysis next year once the engine cycles out the first couple oil runs that typically have higher than normal metal readings from the original assembly process. once you see a trend over a couple changes, you will know for sure in case you need to put your conscience at ease

We have done dealership oil changes during our ownership and it has been Quaker State 0w20. I would stick with what Mazda recommends.
Also our dealership hands us a $20 off mail in rebate after every oil change, so it drops the oil change down to like $40.
Spoke with the service guy today. This dealer uses Castrol GTX, which is fine and is the second brand the manual recommends so I'm gonna go with it. Scooped the OEM splash guards for wifey's birthday since she likes the way they look and I do too. Normally I would put these on but you have to do some cutting in the wheel well that I'm just not into.
One thing of note: there are some odd clunking sounds coming from the suspension on each side when you make moderate to hard turns. I'm not sure if it's related to Mazda's version of g-vectoring or whatever but i'm going to have them take a look at it anyway

Never heard the clunking on ours and I was off on the Quaker State, just had an oil change done Monday and it was indeed Castrol.
Can one of these be optioned almost identical for at or under $30k out the door? Dad is looking at them and when he went to the dealer, the salesman couldn't tell him shit about them. Hyundai on the other hand was very willing to get a fully loaded Tuscon (with ass coolers) otd for $30

Sent from my VK810 4G using Tapatalk Brand new out the door? No chance for a fully loaded GT. You could definitely option a decent CX5 to $30k but i believe overall the prices went up for 2017.
Did the first earl change today to get the factory oil out of there and threw the oem splash guards on there... looks awesome! The clunking turned out to be an issue with the shocks or something and the parts are on back order. A little annoying that a brand new car is having suspension issues but from some light internet research a big chunk of new Mazda warranty issues seem to be suspension related for some reason. So i guess we rollin clunky for a little while.
Also stopped by a local detailing / restoration company and got a quote for a detail and ceramic coating. I figure now is a great time to pony up and do it since the paint is in great shape and it hasn't seen a hand wash (by us) yet. Will post up some pics in a few weeks when that's done!

The interior looks (so I imagine feel) and exterior looks way better than the Tuscon but I wonder if the options and tech ( which are the same or better on the Tuscon for the money) are really that much different.

Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk Yeah we didn't even have the Tucson on our radar. Wifey liked her Elantra but we were never impressed with the fit and finish of their SUVs. Anecdotally (since i haven't driven the Tucson) the CX5 probably drives a lot better due to Mazdas obsession with driving dynamics... this thing is pretty fun to toss around. and yes they have really stepped up the comfort and quality of the vehicle.... Mazda is starting to blur the lines of the mid market and luxury segments. Its crazy how quiet this car is.
I am not saying the Tucson is a bad choice I'm just saying that the Mazda is worth the premium you pay for it... he should definitely check out and test drive a loaded model

Yea with the options he wants, seems like top of the line is the only way to go it seems. Or have one custom built. Lane departure is a big thing on his radar since he'll be using it to go to FL quite a bit. And he'd like to have all the other little warning systems too. And comfort and drivability are important too but I'm not sure he'll be able to tell the difference on a dealer test drive.
One thing, our local Hyundai dealer doubles the power train warranty to 200k 20yr. The Mazda dealer does 200k 10 yr I believe. The Hyundai is turbo'd but I'd feel that would be considered a wear item. But honestly, my dad is super impulsive and if the Mazda sales rep had tried half as hard as the Hyundai rep, he probably would be driving a cx-5 right now

Hahaha nice...
One thing he may want to look into is the radar cruise control if he's going to be using it a lot on long highway drives. I didn't see that the Tucson had that option where as the cx5 does. I thought at first it was kind of pointless; i had it on my jag and never used it once. But i tried it on the way to the dealership this morning and it's a really really cool feature, especially with how much rapid lane changing people do down here. The CX5 gets all of that same obvious advanced safety stuff like lane departure and auto braking, etc but the radar CC is cool. The camera system that reads road signs is also pretty sick, it displays them along with speed, land departure and other configurable things on our heads up display

Interesting, I just assumed it would have it with everything else. I'll be sure to mention the adaptive cruise to him. Wonder how slow it works to. Like could you use it in like crawling traffic. Not saying youd want to but just wondering. The HUD and the road sign recognition would probably be pretty neat for him on road trips though. And i imagine it's much quieter than the Tuscon based off initial fit and finish impression

I believe it will work between 19-90mph, ill have to look in the manual and report back. What's cool is you can set how close you want it to let you be behind the car in front of you. Here's more info on MRCC and the other safety features you get in a loaded GT:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.mazda.com/en/innovation/technology/safety/active_safety/mrcc/">http://www.mazda.com/en/innovation/tech ... fety/mrcc/</a><!-- m -->
The sound thing is what really got me when we test drove the '17, because it's noticeably quieter than the previous year CX5s we test drove. Apparently Mazda assigned an entire team of engineers just to locate and obsessively eliminate cabin noise on this model year... you can definitely tell!!

IIRC, at least on the 2016.5, there is a separate feature for that called city braking. It basically does accident prevention under 15-20MPH and stops for you, wouldn't really call it cruise control or anything though.
FWIW, i paid 25.7K for ours which was the touring with bose and sunroof. I don't think it'd be impossible to get a loaded touring for under 30K which may check off all the boxes.

A 2017 GT CX5 is 29k MSRP without Premium Package (Only package available and is 1.8k). The nice thing about the GT it has all those standard features. I'd bet you could get close to 32k OTD.
Why not look at a low mileage used 2016? Easily get a GT and extra package(s)/accessories under 30k.
New body style started in MY17 I thought

2016-2016.5 looked damn good. The new ones just look better. Can't go wrong with either. I think we paid just under $30k for the GT w/ tech package on a 2016.5.

If you don't want the premium package you are right, you can get all of the safety features discussed above standard and could stick close to that mark. It's the sales tax and dealership add on fees and extras they always try to sneak in (and sometimes don't let you exclude unless you just negotiate the bottom line) that cause that price to rise quick.
