Also had to get some AC work done this spring, sucks. They just don't build units to last in most mass-produced homes. Our condenser coils were literally a pile of rust.

i guess i'll be the one dissenting voice. first time homeowner, bought an 8 year old home in August '14. we did a home warranty just to help cover our bases at purchase, since the place we bought was at the top of our budget and we didn't have our rainy day fund as buffed up as usual....so we figured, we don't know the house really well and better safe than sorry. everyone told us not to do it. we had the house inspected by a reputable guy who caught some things and did a thorough job.

honestly it saved our asses. not a month after we bought (during a 100 degree heat wave week in south GA with a toddler...88 degrees downstairs on the shade side of the house...), our AC compressor died. a week later our condenser died due to debris carried through the lines from the first failure. this summer our AC failed again due to blockage in the lineset from more debris that dislodged from the inline filter.

all in all, it took 5 visits from 3 different companies to sort out the mess over a year's time and get our AC system back as close to 100% as possible. total was over $8,000, i think we paid less than a grand. not long after that, our warranty company dropped us :lol: granted, the warranty company didn't choose the best techs they could have, IMO, but in the end they paid up and fixed the issue.

if i was buying a new place, or one that had recent work done, i probably wouldn't bother. however our house was at that magic ~10 year mark where all the original contractor grade stuff starts to shit the bed and it also went up during the housing boom right before the crash, so I felt like it was reasonable insurance and choose to do it again if i was in a similar situation with another house.

We bought a brand new townhouse and had to make use of the home warranty on multiple occasions. 5+ calls on the upstairs HVAC unit. Ultimately the issue was that they used a cheapo HVAC unit and installed it improperly. If I had to do it again I would potentially try to get a much more thorough inspection of the major parts of the house done and maybe pay to get a better HVAC system in the first place. The home inspection didn't flag anything.

Got our HVAC unit all fixed up. HVAC company gave me the warranty company pricing which was nice for them to do. If anyone need a repair and is wondering about freon prices, they charged the system with 6 lbs @ $22 per pound. Internet research shows freon (r22) going for around $100 per pound.

Next gripe...people who don't understand legal agreements. Customer rents an office trailer from me for 18 months and needs to send it back on day 4. Guess what? You gon' pay the full 18 months rent no matter how many emails you send me disagreeing with this. You signed a legal document saying so.

sucks for you guys. our house is 100 years old. we've got a bunch of old appliances. i've had to fix one or two myself for like $20 pop. not having ac is also much bigger than the monthly savings because them shits are the woooooorst in terms of repairs and cost. you should move.

I'm so warm blooded I'd probably have AC installed in my house no matter where I lived anyway!

That does remind me though, some of the burners "burned out" on our garbage builder grade electric stove, so I either need to figure out how to fix that or replace it soon :x

they're like $15 at the hardware store. if you can plug a lamp into a wall, you can replace an electric burner.

Oh for real? That's not terrible. My buddy had to fix a burned out ring on the same exact stove and it was some kind of relay I think. I'll have to ask him again how much it cost for this particular fix and what all it entailed.

So many people are scared of working on their own AC units. There are only 6 or 7 parts in them, and if you have a newer one it's just like a car were you can buy the refrigerant and do everything yourself, no license needed.

is it a glasstop stove? we literally just replaced a burner in ours the week before thanksgiving. i needed a screwdriver, the ability to memorize how some wires connected, and a credit card to buy the burner :lol: its cake.

21:9 Aspect Ratios.

Why? You cannot "see more" just because it's wider. Sure, there's more to see to the left or right of the subject, but you could also maintain that exact same width and simply add a smidge more on the top and bottom, and hey look, the shot is just as frickin' wide on my 16:9 but I see more sky and ground instead of black bars.

I mean, if the rest of the world wants to go out and buy TVs that look like door mounted sideways then by all means, go for it, just don't lock me into that media format. I remember during the transition from 4:3 to 16:9 you could get practically every movie in widescreen or standard, but now when I rent a movie it's a crapshoot as to whether or not it will use all of the pixels on my TV.

I realize that I'm a luddite standing in the way of progress, I just hate spending good money to rent a movie and having 6" bars on the top and bottom of my TV making my 60" screen feel microscopic somehow.

So like, you *could* switch the view to full screen on your 16:9 TV if the black bars bother you. Since most movies are filmed wider than that, either they cut off the sides for you ("this film was formatted to fit your screen") or you do it by switching to full screen. :dunno: Content is lost either way, which is likely not a real issue.
Now personally I wish 21:9 TVs would sell better, so they'd be cheaper, so I could buy one, cause I think they're cool. So there. But it doesn't seem to be happening.

Waiting on payment for my LS1/M3 today, I reflect yet again on all those numbnut 16-year old commentors with black spraypainted wheels on their otherwise stock cars. They comment "Could be done for $5k cause my uncle's nephew's roommate said so".

Just like the BaT thread where the guy called the Forgeline RS wheels "Chrome" and in general seemed to have no idea what he was actually talking about. (I did appreciate the article Dave since it brought attention to the car!) Just crazy how many people proclaim themselves experts when they have no idea what they are talking about.

Almost as bad is when people link another swapped e36 (325i too) that is $3k under your asking price and looks like this below...seriously?
