Project 1966 Mustang Coupe

Its not how you stand by yo car.... I think we need to see who's old small block is quicker. Smile Car looks sharp man. I have the modern Torq Thrusts on the Challenger and I think it is nice blend of the classic and the modern.

Project has briefly stalled, have not been able to get this beast on the road. Insuring this thing through Hagerty is a pain in the ass, it's taking forever. Can't get tags and temporary trip permit until the insurance is squared away. Then I need to take to this special bureau in order to get permanent registration (in NC, this bureau has to run the VIN through a database in Raleigh to make sure the car isn't stolen I guess?)

Insurance is super cheap at least. Full coverage with $0 deductible is $300 for the entire year.

What's going on with Hagerty? After I dropped the "it's a pretend racecar I'm going to track" idea, it only took a couple days and I was golden. They did call and ask about my one of my daughters who I didn't even mention the application -
"Do you know a so and so, what is her driving record like and does she have access to the car?"
"Yes, <crickets>, No"

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

I don't know what the deal with Hagerty is, I should have coverage by today though hopefully!

Use premium gas.

Also, you'll soon realize why Steve McQueen always looked like he was going to wreck when he shifts.

Definitely, filled up a tank with premium and put in some ethanol stabilizer so those modern new-fangled dino juices don't eat the hoses. Engine was running STRONG last night, love it. This transmission / driveshaft is seriously holding the car back though. That project pretty much just jumped to the top of the list. I felt like I was shifting a tractor ! I was double-clutching and doing my best to find the gears but it is definitely not a user friendly setup.

The overall experience was amazing though. I LOVE that this car is just so mechanical, it's like black and white compared to the voice-controlled computerized cushiness of my Acura. No power steering is um, interesting, but I found myself actually enjoying having to muscle the car around a little. With that said, power steering will likely be a project down the road now for sure Tongue

Yeah, the transmission definitely sucks. I always imagined a T5 and a nice set of aluminum heads would be all the powertrain needed to be really awesome.

Scott since you're in the triangle area, any time you make it down to the queen city just give me a shout and the keys are yours Smile

Those two and an aluminum driveshaft are pretty much all I ever have plans to do to the powertrain, you got it.

any plans to do cruises in it? i'd imagine in Charlotte there's gotta be a healthy hot rod culture with all that NASCAR in the air.

Well my buddy was talking about a Mustang cruise down in Myrtle Beach next July...I think I should have this car in shape enough to drive it that far by then. No AC in the middle of July though makes for a LONGG drive.

Fluid seems to be dripping from the transmission area based on the spots in my garage. So if it wasn't already on its way out, the healthy thrashing I've given it so far may have done the trick  1st and 2nd seem to be harder and harder to find...but it's all good, it's kind of fun beating on a part of the car I know I'll be replacing.

Took the Stang out today to grab wings after church. Seemed to be finding the gears a little better. I met a guy there through the owner of the restaurant who is a buddy of mine...this guy restores classic cars for a living. Prices seem to be reasonable and he showed me some iphone pics of his shop (which was immaculate) and the cars he was working on which were epic. I see my bank account draining already

If you decide to go to Mustang Week next summer let me know, I've been wanting to go for the last few years and it would be great to cruise down there with some other MM/Mustang guys.

It looks like that is the one in Myrtle Beach right? If so we have already discussed and we are definitely going. My buddy (owner of my favorite wing joint here) has a REALLY nice brand new Saleen (the legit ones) stang and my buddy has a nice foxbody so we are probably all going to caravan down there. I will definitely keep in touch as that gets closer.

Here's a pic of the Saleen. We took it out yesterday and it got so many compliments and shouts out the window...fun times!

That S197 Saleen is nice, is it a factory supercharged car? Do you have any pics of the Fox body? I love those old school, push-rod, five liter cars.
