the scirocco is too expensive... they are dialing up the leather and all that crap... they just cant keep it simple.
the concept crx is just for the media. it will never come into existance.
both are hatchbacks... both companies make 160hp motors or a little more... if they kept the interiors simple, no real gizmos and shit... you might get 35mpg from them... and the crx could stay a "2 seater" and the scirocco could even keep the useless back seat... its just never going to happen for the price point. and anything above that price point, they are going to get spanked by... well you said it... the MS3

Based off of the original "square bodied" models built from '66-'77. Ford even had a sweet concept out a few years back complete with a diesel and nitrous.

the concept crx is just for the media. it will never come into existance. The CR-Z is coming at the end of next year to the US, sometime in Spring (March maybe) for Japan. Unfortunately it seems that it's not going to have much power but hopefully there'll be a hotter trim level later with either 160 hp or 200 hp. The only thing is that if the engine bay was designed for the L series engine it may not be easy to accomodate the K series. Hopefully Honda wasn't so shortsighted.

... the 2.3L has 160hp, slightly more than 2500 and less than 35mpg though, but not much...

The first gen Mazda3 was a big step forward for compacts but the current gen is a styling disaster, not to mention it has gotten too heavy. The hatchback weighs 3000 lbs now!
Unfortunately I think light cars may never come back. We'll be telling our kids who drive 4000 lbs Civics how back in our days Civics weighed half as much!

I'd agree that the 2010 styling is awful, thats why we bought the 09. Mikey was talking about cars 3-4 years old, so it would be the previous style. And I dont know why the newer ones are so much heavier but the 1st gen is 2800 lbs.

I'll likely own a 1st gen at some point, but it still doesn't make financial sense for me.

To me, this one's a no brainer. Take the motor, transmission, LSD, brakes, and whatever else you can from the Si Civic.
Price it right around 21 or 22 grand, and you'd have a definite winner!
I think a Fit Si is a no brainer but I would go with the 160 hp engine in it. With 200 hp it would step on the Civic Si's toes too much and probably get too high in price. On the other hand the Fit is a much smaller car than the Si and is a hatchback so maybe they wouldn't really cannibalize each other. But still there's the price. At about $17500 it'd be a great deal but in the 21-22k bracket you start to get up against much more serious competition.
Now for the forthcoming CR-Z, I think a 200 hp (or more) version with the IMA with less weight, a LSD, and better suspension would be a hit (contingent upon price).

BTW, I have no real contributions to this thread since there's nothing I would buy new any time soon, no matter how cool it is. But diesel anything would be nice as I believe I've stated before. Like, a small diesel truck, Ranger or Tundra or whatever. Or a diesel crossover/SAV thing that's less than $40k. Or a diesel RWD car that's less than $40k. It's not hard people, these things should have been out for years now so I could already be buying them used!
