agreed, auto over pump for shooting clays, and 12 over 20.

I guess I don't get your stance. Buckshot is too dangerous if you have kids and neighbors, and birdshot isn't dangerous enough? I guess a shotgun is useless then for most situations? And a handgun isn't any better either, same thing there. A 22 is too small, not enough "stopping power" AND it goes through walls, and you get something with "enough" stopping power, and now you kill your neighbor too. So, don't bother buying a gun for home defense?

I mean, we get it, all guns are dangerous! Practice a lot! But if you just focus on the negatives of each, then none of them are any good for anything. When the reality is, any of them will serve the purpose of home defense if handled correctly. You just have to pick what best meets your needs and understand the limitations.

I dunno, but I'm in! (and if anyone wants to test the "stopping power" of my handgun loaded with #4 birdshot, be my guest)

My shotgun is just a little too short to be used for skeet. Home protection and skeet shooting really require different types of guns. I use mine for both, because it is a bit longer them most tactical guns. (20in barrel) I am pretty good with it, but my 20ga is better for skeet. Yes you can shoot it with the stock folded....a friend of mine did with my gun...but he was aiming as if the stock was out. Needles to say it almost knocked his teeth out and blood was all over. Let me see on the price. I need to look up what I paid and look at what they are going for these days. It is water resistant, the marinekote mossys are always more loot.

Channing, what I was trying to get at, and did a terrible job of doing so, was this myth that buckshot for some reason doesn't go through walls, so a shotgun is the 'perfect' home defense weapon. People spew this line all the time and it's totally false. This is along the same lines as you "don't have to aim" a shotgun. You sure as hell do have to aim, and it sure as hell will go through a wall too. And the reason I said kids, is for what I said above. If a bad guy has your kid, you're not going to fire a shotgun, for fear of hitting your kid.

Obviously nothing is perfect and obviously all guns can kill you. The best solution would be a dog that shoot bees.

But barring that, a shotgun would be fine if you don't think a "hostage" situation is likely and if you think it is then a non-magnum handgun with *expanding* bullets.

Does my stance make sense now?

Yeah there are no kids in the household, I don't have any roommates right now, and I could give a shit about the safety of the person on the receiving end of the shells. The 12 gauge Remington that Justin and my friend recommended seems to be a pretty standard, very reliable and good all around gun for what I'm looking for. I mean honestly, I've shot skeet maybe once in my entire life but I had a blast doing it and would like the option to be able to do it with a gun I bought.

And thanks a lot for the suggestions guys, I'm not being facetious. If you have any other recommendations put em up. Also Chris, let me know when you're heading to that thing...it might give me an excuse to come up. I'm likely going to try to pick up a gun in VA because it's surprisingly a little harder and more involved to do it here in NC. I could swing up and we could do that together.

yeah man, I didn't realize you were refuting more of the "stipud" things people might say about the "perfectness" of a shotgun. Game on!

FWIW, side note -- I'm not shooting at anyone if they have a "hostage". I'm going to be realistic and say I'll likely never train myself enough to try that.
