The Van is getting painted

More along the lines of the BWM. Deep clear coat. Maybe a pit of pearl mixed in.

Anyway Jeff, I think we damn near have a concensus on Orange with gunmetal/black wheels, to match the daytona.

I think it'd be hot as baaaaaaaaaaaaaaalls, but I said that in my first post. Is there any reason why you'd avoid that?

Sylvia says it will look like a giant pumpkin. But I think it would look pretty sweet. The color is a factory packed DuPont color, meaning that you can't really mix it at a body shop because it has special pigments in it. When I ordered it the paint was cheap for some reason. Like it was half of what we expected. But that was over a year ago, so I'll need to call and see what the cost would be.

Orange with black wheels most definitely. I like the Dodge Nitro Orange. It really stands out. The sunburst orange on the SRT4 doesn't have that punch, that the Nitro Orange has.

Dodge Nitro Orange would be sweet. I'd probably go with black trim as opposed to chrome. The Prowler purple is neat but it would look odd on something large like your van.

I was laying in bed watching law and order today and it hit me that frankly...this is not necessary. Changing the color is a pain in the ass and in the end it doesn't really do much for me. It might actually hurt what little resale value it may have to paint it a crazy color. Its a van, it needs to be a van color. I have to many projects and not enough time to spread my focus any farther. Keeping it the color that it is will cut days of prep and work out of this project and considerable materials expense. The van will be getting painted and all the body work done, but the color will be stock. The only real change will be the shaving of the rear deck lid handle, the hood scoop flush in, and the shaving of the hood ornament.

If I were to paint it any color other then stock I'm going to be really particular about everything. I just don't need to care that much. It will destroy why I own the van to begin with, to use it as a fun beater. I have the Daytona to worry about, so I will likely sweeten the pot for this fellow and try to get him on board to repair and paint the van as well as a more professional hand in getting the Daytona done. That is the vehicle that really needs the professional paintjob.

If you want to keep it easy and simple, why not just go black?

Part of my problem is if I change the color I will need to paint the jambs of the doors. I won't be able to live with myself if I don't. The only way to do that properly is to remove the doors, I don't care what anyone says. So skipping that step by not changing the color would make life easier. Also, the doors have some fitment issues that I don't think I will be able to fix (they are sprung) so there is no reason to paint the thing if I can't get the whole package to look right without replacing both of the doors. I guess my point is, if I am going to the trouble to change the color I am going to want the whole thing to look perfect, and I just don't want to care that much.

I just want to focus on other goals and getting the Daytona done is just a higher priority. I want the van painted in the short term because I'm tired of the shitty paint. Hopefully choosing to stick with the stock color will shorten my timeframe further and help get the Daytona back on track. I really want to get a 50's car and starting more and more of these low line projects that take up time and money won't get me to that goal. I'm selling that 16v engine and all that parts that came with it along with leftover high performance parts I got for the Omni that I just don't need.

Maybe do the bottom few inches same color as the wheel (or close) and a little fade into the stock top color.

I know you are trying to keep it simple now, so just ask the painter what would be involved.

You certainly wouldn't have to do door jambs or anything....

It does not belong to him. It is his Dad's and Grandfather's, and he'd be a moron to put a dime's worth of his time into it because it could be sold out from underneath him at any minute.

Is that clear? When Jeff takes over the Challenger as a project, I've no doubt he'll let you donkeys know, but in the meantime how about we all forget it exists and encourage Jeff to finish the Daytona and get whatever he feels necessary from the Van.

I am pretty sure any kind of fade is going to be a tough paintjob, unless this guy specializes in those. What's so hard about pulling the doors off, taping the jambs, spraying, putting doors back on and going? Hell, you don't even have to take the sliding door off to do it, do you?

Well, you sorta got the story right. Its technically not my father's car, it belongs to the business. But that aside, my worry is not so much that the car will get sold from under me, but that my money will not go toward my vision of what the car should be. So I am choosing not to spend any money on it until it is 100% under my control, which will happen. I'm planning on asking for the car for graduation. I guess we will see where that goes.
