The Van is getting painted - Jeff - 01-17-2008

Well, the time has finally come for the van to get some paint and body attention. I am not sure if I will be selling it or not when I graduate but I want to get it fixed up so it will command a few more dollars if I decide to do so. Plus I kinda want to see it with some fresh paint. I have traded my station wagon to a bodyshop man for his labor and parts from a minivan he owns to repair my van. The project will begin in early February and I expect it to take most of that month over the course of weekends and evenings.

The body repair goals -
1. Heavy rust on rear quarter by cutting out and replacing it from the donor van.
2. Hood scoop by fiberglassing it in to the hood from the other van.
3. Lower part of sliding door for dent and wrinkle
4. Rust on sliding door track and roof above windshield
5. Shave rear door handle and lock cylinder

The guy expects the actual painting to be a two stage process. The first stage will involve removing the hood and fenders to prep and paint their undersides and gain access to the door hinges. The doors will be completely removed and the jambs and roof will be painted along with the inside of the fenders. Stage two will be reassembling and aligning all the body panels and prepping the overall van for the final coat and then clear.

Decisions I must make...and I sure would like MM advice.
1. Paint scheme (body/wheels and trim)
2. Hood pins

Paint discussion - I'm gonna begin the meat of this thread by showing you guys who may not have seen it in awhile what the van is looking like now and what my ideas are for the paint job.

With the exception of the wheels and the lack of hoodpins, this is how it looks right now.

The wheels it is riding on now are the stock 16in from my Daytona...seen here in an older photo. These will be the wheels that stay on it, so any reference to the color of the wheels would be to these wheels.

The van's interior is a light gray over a dark gray. The seats are high back buckets with houndÔÇÖs tooth pattern. This was called the "sport interior" as it is a common pattern with the lower line Shelby Daytona model (cloth interior) and shares the sport steering wheel.

It has a new headliner, and that is about all I have to say about that.

So, now that everyone has passed minivan 101 its now time to get to the questions at hand Color and do I keep the hood pins.

My criteria for the color are as follows.
- If IÔÇÖm going to all this trouble, it should be a stand out color
- No period OEM colors, or close facsimiles
- Must go with either black or stock chrome to cover my two trim color possibilities
- Yes, gray does go with almost every color, but it looks better with some more than others

Ill post some idea generating pictures when I get the energysleepy time now.

I know I already said it to you, but I'll post it here for posterity's sake...

If you're going to keep the Van and the daytona...you should make them the same color. I love that color anyway, and having them match (IMHO) would be effin' sweet.

Call me crazy (you're crazy!) but I think it'd be cool as hell, and it *is* a minivan. Might as well have a wacky color like Orange.

- ScottyB - 01-17-2008

great to see you're still going with this thing!

personally i'd love to see the following:
- bottom to upper beltline: bmw steel grey

- upper beltline to the top: gloss black
- wheels: bright silver
- if possible: smoked taillamps
- i'm indifferent about the hoodpins

i just can't see it in one color, and i definitely like darker colors on it. i think the grey would flow really well from all the chrome up front. as a plus, if you tint the windows the black upper will look even sharper. as for the wheels i think a nice silver wheel, or even polished would look simple and cool.

A-Team van. i love it when a plan comes together!

- Evan - 01-17-2008

like Rex said, Mopar Orange.

- Ginger - 01-17-2008

I was thinking bright fucking orange before I even read Rex's post... so that's that.

Another for Dukes Orange.

maeng has my vote, how sweet would it be to have an A-team van i mean seriously.....

- Ginger - 01-17-2008

... but if you paint up an A-Team van, you're immediately that guy.

What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy.

Plus, if you're doing an A-Team van, it's gotta be a big, honkin', half ton, v8 van. It's just a rule.

- JustinG - 01-17-2008

yea i never really hought of it that way....

^^^^that shit is hottttt
Flat black with some whitewalls
Orange of the daytona with some flat black striping

And get rid of the hoodpins, does the van really reach any speeds that would cause a need for hoodpins?

we're talking about Jeff "Free Candy" Morrison, right? the one with the hoodscoop, hood pins and a bunch of stickers on the back of his van, right? he's already that guy, might as well go the full nine.

- Ginger - 01-17-2008

LOL

Maeng's got a point Wink

And I concur, less is more: lose the hoodpins.

Nix the hoodpins and take off all those stickers.

- ViPER1313 - 01-17-2008

IIRC the hoodpins are there because the latch for the hood is broken.

My vote would be a dark dark blue, but thats just me.

- Jeff - 01-17-2008

Thanks for all the commentary guys!! I think I will order a new hood latch handle from mopar. I just could never find one that wasn't broken after mine broke! Plus I thought the hoodpins would be a neat touch, but I was wrong. At this point I feel like the runners are Orange, Black, Blue, and Graphite. All of which could look good with either chrome or black trim bits.

The van Justin pictured is actually a 3.3L V6 turbo van. Fully custom deal. I guess if we want to use DSM talk that is a 2G van...the same as mine for the most part but with the rounded 90's flair. I could actually convert my van to that front end if I wanted to...hmmm

Anyway, as for being "that guy" I'm pretty much him already, and I love it. That's the whole reason for having the van. But if it was A-teamed out and a turbo van I would be "that guy" for two different reasons...I only want the fact that the van is turbo to be the reason it is baller. I can't tell you how many times I have literally had to tell people I'm "that guy" in class when they say "have you seen that freakin crazy turbo minivan around campus!?!?!" Its always with admiration though, I don't get any hate.

- Feersty - 01-18-2008

Van looks good Jeff. Props for taking a project and following it all the way through. I would definitely go with the orange.

- Jeff - 01-18-2008

Before you start talkin shit...just think about it. The center part of the grill and wheels blacked out But leave the chrome around the lights and the door handles...

Other possibilities

Color of the Daytona...

- Jeff - 01-18-2008

The charger and the Nitro are not the same color. The code is different. The Nitro is a little flatter and lighter in real life.

Edit- Better picture of Sunburst Orange... according to the paint code at least.

- Mike - 01-18-2008

NOT purple. i think the daytona color would be really hot and matching cars? sweet.
