Found several examples on CL, autotrader, and the supra forums but I'll have to go take a look at them. Found a thoroughly maintained 1JZ '89 in WV for 6.5...hopefully that'll be around for a while longer, perhaps I can take a look, I've been in touch with the owner.

No worries, it would just be awesome if his car would be for sale!
Ninja edit: Charcoal Gray Metallic FTMFW. I LOVE this color. If I end up owning one of these cars, it will one day look exactly like this
nice. my old maxima was charcoal grey, i loved it too.

This guys - he's actually the guy that painted my car - somebody gave it to him for some work, and he repainted it a bling silver, not charcoal..but i thouhgt it looked pretty sweet when I saw it

Goodspeed, you know my friend you met with the 88? Would you be interested in that car?
I know its an 88 but its got a few years old repaint that looks absolutely stunning (seriously its incredible on that old of a car) and was done very well. Only imperfections are oon the back bumper where he gave a tap to another car. The car runs pretty quick, I personally have worked on this car a lot. The headgasket was replaced relatively (2.5 years ago), pretty recent. The car has almmost new AVS ES100s on it with new rotors and pads and SS lines all around. Has the red interior that is starting to show its age, but with a new shift knob and emergency brake boot would look like a few year old vehicle. Its of course 5-speed, has upgraded intercooler piping and the turbo was sent out and is freshly rebuilt. Has a 3-inch exhaust and the car runs awesome. This kid never gets on the car, and before his daily driver van died about a year ago, the car HAD NEVER EVEN SEEN RAIN! Since then he has been using it as a daily driver. This is one of my good friends and ive always known he really wanted a bike, so this might be a good opportunity for you both.
Problems the car has:
Targa likes to leak a little bit
Hatch likes to leak a littlle bit
Both in heavy rain
Other than that the thing runs perfectly, and has a good amount of power to boot for a newbie. It WILL run 13s, plus its a silver gray metallic.....

That sounds like a great deal, if anything I'll keep it firmly in mind. The thing is, part of the reason I chose '89 and up is for the driver side airbag. Its basically the only parental "must have". I have two leads on '89 up cars I found on the Supra forums that I'll pursue once I'm back in the States next week, but this could be a good backup should nothing happen with the other cars. Pre '89's are a lot easier to find from my experience so theres no definite chance I'll find the right one. Thanks though, I'm sure you and I can figure all this out back at the apt! Does he have a price in mind??
why not just tell your parents it has an airbag :dunno:

Glue a balloon to the steering wheel.
Honestly, early '90's airbags suck anyway, they were designed to stop a 250lb person who ISN'T wearing his seatbelt. Needless to say, if you are, and you run it in to a ditch or have some other low speed accident, it's going to do a lot of damage to your face when you otherwise would have been ok.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
No channing, you're wrong. Airbags (as many as you can fit... 6, 12, 37!), hybrid engines, all season tires and onstar are going to SAVE US ALL! Dont you want salvation?

Show your parents some pictures of people who have been badly injured from the early airbags. They inflate way to fast and hurt like hell. I got into the same argument with my parents when i wanted a CRX, i showed them the pictures and it shut them up real quick.
they still said it wasn't a "safe" car, i bought it anyway and put a turbo in it.
I know the MK3 is a safe car with or without the airbag, but I prefer the '89 up cars for other reasons and I could just find a way to deactivate it or swap steering wheels if it really bothers me.
or you could just hurry up and buy a damn car already
How about offer him 4200 cash? The thing about is, you know the history of the car, headgasket, brakes, and tires are all done, the thing runs perfect, and the mods are tastefully done with beautiful paint and no issues aside from leaking targa which every single one of them have a problem with.
What are other reasons for a post 89? I am not trying to push this as he is not TRYING to sell it but I asked him if somebody came up to him with 4500 cash would he sell it and he has actually been thinking that maybe yes.
The only reason I am advertising his car so much is it has a good history when these cars are so damnn finicky and you need something that isnt going to be a dump which 80% of the mk3s you are gonna find will be, and there are always things you find after the fact no matter how good the car looks.

Post 89 also looks better and is alot easier to put a 1JZ in.
But I still don't understand why not an SC300....

Please stop shitting up my thread, thank you.
A quick autotrader search reveals that there are no manual transmission SC's within 200 miles of the DC area. They are out there, but I'm not going to all of a sudden put all my efforts into finding one at the moment. I think they're a bit too big for me, and I'd like the bit of sportiness that a MK3 sort of has. Plus I'm sure insurance costs jump quite a bit when they see "Lexus" in the name.
DJ, I'm not in anyway discounting Gus's MK3, its probably a nicer example than any other I've come across. However, I'm just really for the '89 up looks and I'm really not a fan of the red interior. But its still a very real possibility and I'm very glad and fortunate that you came to me with it, took a lot of "worrying" out of my search. Like I said, if I come back and find that the '89 up cars are complete POS's (hopefully you and Ryan and any one else will come with and look haha), I'll gladly talk to Gus and see if we can work something out. Thanks again
