The tires I got are summer only. I am pretty happy with them so far. I have been ripping around Tyson's and they have tons of grip. No excessive noise. Decent ride comfort.

It hardly snows here. All seasons tires are a waste. Why settle for mediocrity in all conditions when you can excel in two and just not drive in the third. (dry, wet, snow)

You'll notice that the dry and wet ratings for the Pilot AS are higher. Now they are more expensive than the summer tires, but so are other "ultra high performance" summer tires. In any event, AS aren't the crap all year round you claim them to be but have fun staying at home when it snows.

Nice try. Why don't you compare like tires? The AS tires you listed cost an average of $50 more than my tires. The cheapest being only $20 more, and still not preforming as well as mine.

but i'm completely with Bagg on the AS tire issue - i've driven in snow with the Kumho Ecsta-712's with a few very minor issues and they're summer tires. I'm not planning on getting AS's unless they're performing just as well with about the same amount of tread life and they're cheaper in price.

FWIW, the XGT4 were the "entry-level" AS Michelin tire. You're right about the pricing, in that case you are paying for, but I'm not sure I agree those tires are even a valid comparison because they don't make them any more. You'll notice I said AS of today... as I think they've made dramtic improvements over dry performance and tread life over the last 5 years. Having no experience with the newest version of the XGT (Z)4 I can only say that it rates on par with the Kumhos.
Anecdotally, my mom had Pilot Sport (non-AS) on her V8 A6 and slid right though a stop sign in a half inch of snow so not all summer tires perform "good enough" in wintry conditions.

My last two cars I've bought in what I consider the "moderate usage" stage of it's life so I've ended up replacing the OEMs on both. I never seem to keep the car long enough to use up what I buy though.

haha really? I had some of those on a my 325 years ago and they were miserable! I had to dig two DRY trenches all the way up my parents driveway before I could get that poor thing out! :lol: And the rest of our cars of course had no problem getting in and out when it was still covered with snow (of course they were FWD's on all seaons though). And I got it stuck once over at Jess' parents place and she and her mom had to push my car off a nearly flat surface. Embarassing. :roll:

AS tires might be helpful in the Valley but does it snow hard enough/long enough to really worry about driving in the snow. Most of the time, the roads are plowed before I'm awake and if it isn't, work from home or play hookie.

I don't worry about it per se. I'm certainly not one of those people who feels like I need an SUV, with 4WD low and studded tires to get around Nova... I just like to actually drive in the stuff. I guess I'm different in that the first thing I do as soon as any snow starts to accumulate is go out for a drive and I want something that will support my habit. Hell, I'll drive to the grocery store to buy a quart of milk just as an excuse to go out in the stuff.

I must have been too, because I liked my 712's (other than snow obviously). So did GRM. Unlike a lot of street tires, they actually get sticky when hot and don't fall apart, and they made a great track/street tire for me.
Personally I agree that Kumho (and Falken) have proven that you do NOT get what you pay for when it comes to tires. IMHO, most of what you pay for is the name, and the names that have been around forever (like Michelin, Bridgestone) charge a whole lot for it.
