random question: are hoses considered wear items?

Mine failed at similar mileage and the coil packs were doing just fine.

If you want to play semantics on it, then go ahead, but the bottom line is that in 100k miles you should expect to have to replace something out of wear and tear. If its a coolant hose, or a p/s hose, or an exhaust manifold or whatever.

i'm not saying it wont fail, the original question was "would you consider a hose a 'wear item'?" semantics is the whole issue at hand. hyundai considers a hose a wear item therefore it wont cover its replacement under warranty.

i think so, yeah, but the certain hyundai in question i dont think is even close to 100k. (ir)regardless the PS hose was replaced by a reputable shop for a couple hundred cheaper than what the dealer was offering to replace it for.

I really don't know - I really think its all up to the manufacturers discretion. For example, brake rotors are covered against warping (at least for Fords) for the 3yr/36k mile warranty. Why that is covered and something like a hose is not is beyond me.....

^ Because warping shouldn't be a regular usage occurrance. If it's covered I think it's recognition that they're having a problem, and a problem controlling it. That's a good thing; a stand up move. If their PS hoses started failing prematurely regularly then I'd hope they'd cover them, too.

Just an FYI, Hyundai's 10yr/100k mile warranty is pretty much the engine itself and the transmission. Everything else is listed under a 5yr/60k mile warranty as explained below:

5 YEAR / 60,000 MILES
NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY Covers nearly every new vehicle component
Covers repair or replacement of any component manufactured or originally installed by Hyundai that is defective in material or factory workmanship, under normal use and maintenance.

Following components covered for time and mileage limits indicated:
- Radio And Sound Systems (i.e. radio, cassette tape drive mechanism, and compact disc player): 3 years / 36,000 miles
- Paint: 3 years/ 36,000 miles
- Battery: 3 years / unlimited miles (100% covered 2 years / unlimited miles; after 2 years and within 3 years, 25% cost of battery and 100% labor cost covered)
- Air Conditioner Refrigerant Charge: 1 year / unlimited miles
- Adjustments: 1 year / 12,000 miles
- Wear Items: 1 year / 12,000 miles (e.g. belts, brake pads & linings, clutch linings, filters, wiper blades, bulbs, fuses)

I could not find anything more detained, and hoses are not listed as an exception under "Wear Items," although the "e.g." gives Hyundai a lot of leeway.
