"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Of those three I'd have to say you'd probably be the most happy with the CX-7. It's the sportiest of the three and probably has the best interior (I haven't gotten a good look at the Edge though). Where can your gf get an AWD CX-7 for $23k though? The AWD model starts at around $26-27k. If she can get it for $23k that's a no-brainer.

The only caveat is that Mazda has had a less than stellar record of late with their performance engines.

You might also wanna check out the Forester XT. It's fast, has some aftermarket support from JDM land, proven engine, proven AWD, and is reasonably priced.

If you go down the ladder further you might as well have her check out the CR-V and RAV4 (certified used and new).

Nothing as bad as the RX-8 but there was a TSB for an engine reflash I believe and the most frequent complaint I've heard is some sort of power loss. It might just be something minor that is fixed with a reflash.

Here are a link about it.

The MS6 was the first car to get that engine but now the CX-7 and MS3 have it too so it might not be a big gamble to buy one. The upside is that aftermarket parts for the MS6 and MS3 will probably also be good on the CX-7

On the crossover SUV vs sedan argument I would calculate out how many days of snow you have in your area then calculate the total amount of extra gas you'd have to buy with a SUV over a sedan. If you only have 3-6 big snow days you might as well get something with better gas mileage and pocket that money.

Unless your girl is a nurse or some other profession that has to get to work in the snow the ground clearance isn't a big deal. Not only that, but a SUV takes longer to stop, and that obviously gets worse when there's not much traction to begin with. Also, for the other 360 days of the year its not snowing the better handling of something like the Legacy GT will help her stay out of accidents (assuming you don't add too much boost...).

i'm with g on the overvalue of awd... i was really reluctant to get the s2000 because i knew it'd go nowhere in the snow. you know how many days that affected my ability to get around last year? once. the 364 other days of the year i was happy in my small, sporty, and not at all practical vehicle.

reflashes are common, especially on a new engine. I wouldnt interpret that as poor reliability or an issue at all.

I've seen some badass turbo-swapped XTs =D

My vote is for the Mazda. Although, from the commercial I saw, with navigation and all that it's probably going to bump it up to around 30k. At least the one with navi in their commercial was that much... I'd imagine once you start throwing some of the premium options in there it would bring it up over 23k

She liked it therefore she got it, shes not a retard, and didnt just jump into it, shes been researching for a couple of months and just got serious about purchasing these past few weeks. Thus her purchase.
