Saw a 85 Ninja 500 w/ a 86 1000cc engine in it on Craig's list last week. Needed quite a bit of work but it was only $700. I almost had to go get it...then I remembered the other 3 cars I need to finish.

A note about slower bikes, 500R was perfect for me starting out. Make sure you hold off on group rides for as long as possible, cause you will want to show people your skillz. People don't know what your limits are and will likely have bikes that are faster and can lean more. Both myself and my buddy wrecked on 500Rs doing group rides with siginificantly faster bikes..

I'm sorry Rob but that is hogwash. If you have so little control over your ego that you can't refrain from riding outside of your limits because some other people are faster than you, then you shouldn't be riding period. There is always going to be someone willing to take more risk than you (whether they have the skills to do it or not), but that doesn't mean you have to do the same thing.

The lesson here is not that you shouldn't go on group rides, the lesson is to not out ride your skill level and the conditions on the road. I wouldn't ride with showboating fools anyway but that's not because I would try the same thing, its because I don't want to get taken out because of someone else's mistake/stupidity.

An EX500 will go slower in a straight line, sure... but it's not that hard to hussle them around a bend every bit as quickly as some green jackass on a showroom gsxr1000 who has the "my bike is new, bigger, faster" mentality.

Did you know a 250 holds Summit's bike lap record?

Bigger != faster

*edit* It's not uncommon to see a 500 turn a 1:29 at Summit main. I've seen good SV racers turn 1:24's. By contrast I've lapped my VFR at the same 1:35-1:40 pace as anothe guy in the run group on a brand new ZX10R. No matter your mental perception, thse things are faster than any of us... even a lowly Ninja 500. I'd love to have one, really, lots of fun.

That's not the point, the bike is irrelevant. Its about the piece of equipment between your ears. You have to know your limits and make good decisions about what risks to take and which ones you shouldn't take.

It doesn't matter if you go on a group ride with a 250 or a 1000, if you're prone to riding outside your skill level just to keep up with faster riders you'll crash either one of those bikes. Only difference is you might be going faster when you hit something on the 1000.

Mike, look at it this way - 'tis a good deal, 'tis a bike you like the looks and feel of, then buy it! If you find it's not the right bike for you simply sell it again.

I started riding on a 1974 Honda 125. My mom on the other hand started on a Harley 1200 Sportster (she's no bigger than me). As G put so nicely, it's the equipment between your ears that matters. You will lay the bike down one day, and it's really not that big of a deal. No worse than backing your car into a pole, curbbing the rims, falling down the stairs, or the uncountable other mistakes imperfect humans make. I mean, think how many times you've wrecked your Mt. Bike!

I say go for it. All you nova folks swing down to the 'burg and we'll go on some really sweet rides at whatever pace works for the group. We'll teach you as much as we can Mike, and we'll do our best to not push you too far outside of your comfort zone!
