yeah i saw that this morning... not sure it is sporty enough for me. how hard is it and what does it cost to replace the chain and sprockets?

Easy to replace chain and sprockets. Done in half an hour (if you get the right parts).
It'll let you drag a knee and it doesn't have enough power to make you have to worry about getting sput off every time you open the throttle. My first bike was a GS. Can't really go wrong with it.. if you keep it long enough and decide you want to do track days it'll handle that, and if you move beyond that you can run it in lightweight twins (though the Ninja 500's are a little stronger).

i had a '95. i loved it. It's enough to start with, but you will want something more. That's a hell of a price though with the maintenance that was done. I'm assuming this will be sold in the next 24 hours. Not kidding.

yeah, the price is the killer, but i'd really like to start out with something a bit sportier.
there was a honda 599 on CL the other day with a dented tank. i think the guy wanted 3800, though...

Why?
Because it looks cool? Learn how to ride the thing, and then worry about looking cool. Buy the cheap starter bike now, ride it for 6 months, then you can look cool. It will take you a few months to get used to riding something with two wheels and an engine, you really dont want something thats going to get you in trouble before you know how to ride out of it.
I wish I had bought one of these or a Ninja 500 instead of my FZ - I would have spent more time worrying about riding than worrying about whether the thing was going to get me home or spit me off.

I think I'd be happy on a 500... the only time you're disappointed with the speed is when everybody whacks it open getting on to the highway and you're a bit behind. It's still got more grip than most people are going to know what to do with.

, you won't have to worry about replacing plastics or expensive parts.edit: you'll still be quicker than most cars on the road. If this isn't what you want though, get what you want. Just remember the gear :wink:

Also, do not forget that you will be faster on a smaller bike that you are confident in riding, than something with more power than you know how to handle - which is probably why I'll never get a modern Jap Literbike (R1, GSXR 1000, etc).

I rode pete's bike last weekend and I only had a t-shirt on, and I felt very, very exposed. I didnt like it.

Wish I had listened to the same advice. I haven't heard a story where someone was happy getting the "better" bike in the end.

fyi, the 1/4 on that bike is 15.2 average :wink: , just a hair below the Si i used to have. I'll just tell you it won't feel like it.
you won't necessarily drop your first bike, but you the odds are high. Just make sure you have frame sliders with any plastics.

You're missing the point that you wont be any faster on an R6, R1, Ninja 250 or GS500. Something like a 'slow' 500/600 will be slow enough to keep you out of trouble, but still give you the giggles when you wind it out in 1st/2nd gear. My FZ had ~60hp and it was more than enough to start with - probably good for 13's in the 1/4.

My first bike was a 2001 GS500. Absolutely best move I ever made. Perfect for learning on without worrying about death. It got to the point I could drag the pegs on it no problem. Rode it for a year and then upgraded. It has more than enough power to get your attention and you'll be 99% of the cars off the line and in the twisties (if you are so inclined).
