So I bought an E30.

Just three pictures, none of it's best sides:

The Engine:

That's the craptastic Eta engine. 2.7L, 4500 rpm redline. I am 99% sure I'm tossing it in favor of an M50 (E34/36 24valve). Here's why:
This car is the victim of a failed clutch job, and Homeboy has lost the clutch he bought. Which means I'd have to buy a clutch. Which is 200ish dollars. Also, for my own peace of mind, I'd have to do the timing belt, acc belts, hoses, lines, and water pump. Well after all that shit, I'm halfway to a swap anyway. And 190hp and lots of aftermarket > 130hp and zero aftermarket. And hell, for 250 bucks...Just be glad I'm not tossing a small block, or a 1JZ or something in there.

The Interior:
I gotta say, it's a real shame when people let shit rot like this. I really like the sport wheel and the sport seats, and I might *try* to salvage the seats. Maybe. But the carpet is a complete writeoff and the dash is gonna need some work too. But honestly, it's not as bad as it looks...ok, it's every bit as bad as it looks. But I'm tearing it all out. So chill, winstooooon.

Something else I want to mention here is that homeboy broke the key off in the ignition. So he had been starting the car with the broken key. No big deal, I'll take it to a locksmith. But then he tells me that his SECOND factory key, he cut the end off so he'd have two "good" keys. :x So I might still take it to a locksmith, but more likely I'm going to try to talk Chris into selling me his convertable steering column.

For cheap.

The Trunk:

Well, isn't this pretty. Apparently, E30's like to leak into their trunks. So there's some rough stuff (I assumed it was rust) underneath the carpet. The good part is that there's no rust in the fenders, and there's no poke-your-finger-through-and-see-the-ground rust in the trunk. If it is rust, it'll come off with some sanding and then I can primer it and slap in some truck-bed liner. Like, rhino lining or something. Hell, maybe I'll do that for the interior too.

I wish I had some pictures of the outside of the car, but I didn't think about it, and neither did Julie -- we really took pictures of the worst aspects of the car. But there's no rust in the fenders, doors, hood, roof, anything. The paint is good if I can get that mossy crap off of it (it's on every street sign down there, looks like green pollen or something) and all of the glass is good, which would have been a dealbreaker.

But, if you take this:

And make it black, and really dirty, take off the E30arossa skirts, and put regular bottlecaps on it, that's what we're talking about. Mostly, I'm showing you that cuz that's what the front lip looks like. It looks good. Very aggressive.

Anyway, yes I know it's ugly, and dirty, and a POS blahblahblah. Yes, I know it's going to be alot of work. If you all (RJ, John) don't think I'll keep it, I suggest you start a "How long will Rex keep this pile" pool, I'm sure you could get some wagers, and RJ doesn't have anything to occupy his time while his stripes dry, so he could work out some odds.

Is it a bad sign that the best car in your stable is a Metro?

Not really. I made a deal with myself when I had the 240:

I would never modify my daily driver for performance, and in return, I would allow myself to attempt the most bizarre, crazy-eddie projects in history.

It's worked out so far.

Rex, keep in mind that once you get the motor for the m50 swap you are still looking at atleast 1000 dollars worth of parts to get the motor running in the car.
That in mind I wouldn't mind helping you out.

I'm planning on buying a parts car. I've got a tentative budget, but it certainly doesn't include 1000 bucks in parts, unless you're counting maintenance stuff.

I mean, to put the motor *in* the car, I've got about 200 bucks in mounts and mounting arms, assuming I start with an E34 M50.

You just wont stop until you find a project you can't accomplish, will you Rex  Next time, start with something this beat up - it should occupy you for at least 3 months.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

Hmmm... how many cars has Rex had? How many of them were "accomplished" by the time they were let go?

This question actually came up when I was talking to RJ. I have an answer, in chronological order:

1985 Chevrolet S10
1990 Geo Storm
1993 Eagle Talon TSI AWD
1988 Subaru XT-6
1986 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer
1995 Chevrolet S10
1991 Nissan 240SX
1994 Subaru SVX
1989 Toyota Camry
1990 Toyota Supra 1JZ-GTE
1994 Volvo 940SE
and the current stable.

And all of them, without exception, drove away in more or less running condition when I cut them, with the exception of the 240, which doesn't count, cuz the buyer didn't care.

And Adam, I wouldn't necessarily say that I won't stop until I'm beaten by something. It's just that I enjoy the act of creation as much as I enjoy actually driving. Everything is a learning experience and I've learned alot. That's part of the point, isn't it?

Although, admittedly, it's time to settle down.
