Unfortunately Chan is right. The car will have to be pretty well developed before I can start moving in on the medium prepped 325's. Even then I think I probably won't be able to hang unless its a handling track like CMP or Lime Rock.

At about 5:30 am on 95 South this morning I made the decision to let this weekend go. I had finally gotten everything together and had been driving for about 45 minutes when I realized I had forgotten my helmet. At that point I knew it was time to hang it up.
Really the trouble started back when Camel Tow I (the Silverado) crapped out on me. Had I been able to get it I would have been able to pick up Geeser II over a week ago. Because of that mishap I didn't pick up the car until Sunday. I still figured I could make the race and maybe I could have, had I not had so much trouble with the trailer... Corey (Honda Challenge racer from Culpeper) was gracious enough to let me borrow his trailer. So I drove down to Culpeper on Thursday night to go pick it up. I had bought the hitch and ball and figured I was all set but when I got there I realized that my truck had the wrong kind of connector for the trailer (4-pin vs 7-pin). Of course everything was closed by that point so I decided to come back early Friday. That meant I was going to miss qualifying but I could still make Saturday and Sunday's race. I bought an adapter but that turned out to be wrong too so Corey's dad and I went to NAPA to wire up a custom solution. I finally got the trailer but at that point it was too late to get to VIR in time for any of Friday's activities so I figured I'd take time to work on the car a bit. So Friday night I go to load up the trailer but I had problems getting the ratchet tie-downs right, as well as other minor annoyances. I finally got on the road at about 4 or so but, I had forgotten my helmet. I tried my damnedest to make it this time but there was just way too much in the air for me to get everything for this weekend. One thing's for sure, doing things last minute with a racecar is orders of magnitude more difficult than doing so with a street car. I'm kinda pissed but I'll just have to wait a few more weeks and chalk it up to experience. At least in my haste I didn't do anything stupid like strap the car up to the trailer improperly or make it all the way down to Danville sans helmet...

Maeng makes a very good point. It would be far better to prep way beforehand and be well rested for the weekend, since you'll be under enough stress as it is. It sounds like you had prepared well, but a few things that come up can really put a kink in the big plan very quickly.
On a side note, I'm not sure if you are going to buy your own trailer, but this will give you a few weeks to acquire one and become familiar with it, so that these kinds of mishaps don't hold you back next time, allowing you to have a more smooth prep for the track. Sorry to hear you weren't able to make it, I know you're pretty upset since you had been working so hard to make it to this event. However, I think it's better to take your time and possibly miss out on one event so that you are better prepared, rather than rushing and not being truly ready and end up something happening that could have been prevented. When's the next event, maybe you can get a little MM support team to make it a little easier for ya.

I really think you made the right call G. Even if you hadnt forgotten your helmet.

All right. I decided to take the Geeser II to Capitol Raceway to do alittle draggin'. I figured I could practice my standing start and get an idea of how fast the car was.
So on my first run I ran a 15.7 at 87 mph. Slower than stock (stock is 15.6) but I missed the shift into 4th and I wasn't really trying to shift too quickly. My second run I ran a 15.8 at 88 for some reason. The last run I seriously missed the shift into 2nd so it was like a 17-something at 87. I felt like the car should've been a bit quicker with what was on it, even though I hadn't really drag raced before. So on Saturday when we were working on our cars I decided to to check the compression to see if that might have had something to do with it. 140 psi across all four cylinders. 140. As in, 70 psi less than the lowest cylinder on my old GS-R. No wonder the car was so slow! Disheartening for sure, since its like I'm losing at least 1 or 2 seconds per lap just on power. What really concerns me though is that I don't want my engine to let go before the end of this season. If it doesn't I'll get it rebuilt over the off season. In the meantime I'll have to check to see how much a new block will run, in the event that the engine does a BAR F1 impression. This weekend I'll be off to Beaverun raceway for the maiden voyage. My main goal will be to have fun and get a feel for the car. -G
