MM Racer Season 1 REMIX - G.Irish - 03-05-2004

As some of you know, I travel a lot (a whole f'ing lot) for my job. This changes a lot of things for me, not the least of which being that it is difficult for me to plan my rookie season of racing. However, I've just received my March/April schedule and it looks like I'll be able to make the first race of the DC Region SCCA schedule (April 24-25). Here are my plans/schemes.

Car Prep
The time has come to take the GS-R off the street and turn it into a racecar. The class I'll be running is showroom stock b (SSB)(http://www.scca.org/amateur/club_racing ... index.html). Right now the class is pretty much 'Miatas Gone Wild' but there are a few other cars in class that are just as quick, including mine (a Geeser was leading last year's championship race before he got punted). There's really not much to prepping a car for SS in theory but in practice there are a couple of things you've got to do if you want your season to go smoothly.

First, the Integra GS-R is allowed some extra modifications for the class (referred to as a trunk kit) which consists of the Integra Type-R shocks and springs and the Mugen 26 mm rear anti-swaybar. I already bought the shocks/springs (as well as new ITR rear lower control arms) but the swaybar is on back order from Japan .

So, aside from the suspension stuff what do I need to do? Here we go:
-Roll cage (purchasing a bolt-in)
-Race seat
-Fire extinguisher
-Steering wheel (already have it)
-Replace ball joints
-Rebuild brake calipers
-Stainless steel brake lines
-Replace wheel bearings
-Rebuild brake master cylinder
-Change timing belt
-Mount tires

Driving/Mad Skillz
One of my biggest concerns is that I won't get as much seat time as I'd like this year. My original plan was to purchase a Rotax kart(www.rmaxchallenge.com) and race that in addition to the Integra just so I could get more seat time. Not sure if I'm going to buy the kart this season but I plan to rent a Rotax for a race on April 18th to get some practice before the opening weekend.

Brief description of Rotax: All rotax karts run a sealed 125 cc motor putting out 30ish horsepower. You can run whatever chassis you want, most are similar/identical to their shifter brethren. They run mostly on sprint tracks (less than a mile long) and can break 100 mph with the right gearing

Hopefully I won't be on the receiving end of one of these:

That's pretty much it for now. I'm going to try to score a tow vehicle and trailer sometime this month but if I don't it shouldn't be too big of a problem because the Geeser will still be street legal Smile.

Damn I want to race karts.

Thats my plan for next year at least... fuck racing rattletrap shitbox hondas, they break too much Wink

Kickass buddy! I can;t wait to see it happen. Oh yeah, dibs on your GS-R LCAs and sway bar Smile

- G.Irish - 03-22-2004

New racecar is coming soon. Probably another GS-R but this one will be an ITS/H3 car. Differences:

-Shocks and springs are free
-Stripped interior
-I/H/E and ECU changes allowed
-Port and polished head allowed
-Bushings are free
-Can add limited slip differential
-Can use any aftermarket 15x7 wheels

More details to follow.

- Mike - 03-22-2004

Kickass, can't wait to get my hands dirty with the build or crewing Smile

I think you're probably making a good decision with this G. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help/when you'll workin on it, I'll try to get up there and lend a hand, even if it is only to go to the convenience store and pick up some airheads

Got me a line on a cheap one pretty soon. Ahhh the benefits of getting to know the shifter guys and offering them the option to play at Summit.

Geeser II

After Geeser I got stolen I got an email from a guy looking to sell his partially prepper for ITS GS-R for a good price. I figured it was the deal I was waiting for and kept in touch.

So I decided it was time to purchase the Camel Tow Vehicle. I landed on a 2000 4wd Chevy Silverado for $8k, figured it would last awhile since domestic trucks are usually durable. WRONG. First morning I get in it to go to work it wouldn't start, had to have it flat-bedded to the dealership. They couldn't reproduce the problem so I took it back. 1 week later to the day the power steering cuts out while I'm going around a turn and I nearly hit a guard rail. Turns out the engine had died. It died two more times on my way back home. So I said f this and took it back to the dealership and traded it in for a 2000 Tundra. Got a fairly good deal on it and its a much nicer truck.

So today I went and picked up the GS-R. Its a black 96 with a bolt-in cage, tokico illumina shocks, 350/450 lbs springs, intake/header/exhaust, Sparco seat, and a few other safety items. Today we did the annual tech inspection in NJ so its mostly ready to go for my first race which is next Friday at VIR (May 7, 8, 9). I have to wire up my transponder, put on new rear rotors, strip more of the interior out, and give her an oil change before then.

I've already got a set of Team Dynamics wheels and I'll probably pick up another set in the next few weeks. The most immediate next step will be hardcore full race shocks and a couple of different springs to experiment with as well as a rear sway bar. I may try to get a lsd in there before the end of this season too.

That is all for now, I've gotta go to work tomorrow.

w00t! Bout time you updated the club, fool Smile. As you know, I'm always up for wrenchin if you need any help, provided I don't have to work :? .

- G.Irish - 05-04-2004

The red GS-R won't be available for auction for at least 4 weeks. I'll give them a call in two to see where they're at.

Looks like I won't have a problem finding crew, I'll be sure to give you guys plenty of knuckle busting work to do Tongue

I'll have some pics up in a few, my Cox account is down for maintenance.
