that's probably what i'd do. those bearings may already be so far gone that its scoring the hub. regardless its easier to just install a whole new dressed hub vs yanking and pressing bearings.

This is my primary concern, and a little less work to install them would definitely be nice. Still need to find a decent DIY for it.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the radio barely works.

Has anyone ever bought parts from 1Aauto? They have the best deal I've found so far on hub assemblies including the bearing. Also, is this a part we should or should not cheap out on? Prices seem to range from $30 on RA (although it's out of stock) to $110+ for one rear hub assembly including the bearing.

Also, based on the pictures the hub and bearing don't come already pressed in, so we're not going to save any labor. However if there's a good chance the hubs are scored, I'm ok just replacing them instead of fucking around trying to drive a new bearing into a marred up hub.

Any of you subaru gurus have any thoughts or guidance?

EDIT: That part on 1A was for the Legacy. 1A also doesn't have rear hubs in stock, nor do they have rear bearings. What's going on? Are the rear bearings on this thing so shit that every single replacement part has already been bought? :dunno:

i'll look up some part #'s later. there's no way rear bearings are NLA for these things, that's just impossible. these imprezas ran from like 1994 to 2001 so there is probably some superceded part number by now and its just not coming up in a search correctly.

That'd be awesome, while you're at it see if you can find a P/N for the oil pan gasket. I'm also weirdly coming up with nothing for that, even looking at the engine diagram: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/auto-parts/1997/subaru/impreza/outback-trim/2-2l-h4-gas-engine/engine-cat/oil-pan-scat/?part_number=11109aa093">https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/auto ... 11109aa093</a><!-- m -->

EDIT: Also the oil filler neck/o-ring if you can find it.

is this a disc or drum car on the rear? it appears almost any 5x100 hub from a pre-07 subaru should be able to retrofit but if its drums that complicates things a little, but still workable.

It does in fact have drums, from what I've heard only the 2.5RS model of this generation got real rear brakes.

Convert to discs. Hell. Should be able to yank the whole kitten caboodle from a WRX and put 'em on there.

also, just a side thought, start searching RS25.com for a bunch of tricks to caring for these N/A models. that's where all the non-turbo stepchildren go to feel cool.

Yeah I made an account on RS25 last night.

Regarding the rear wheel bearing and brake situation, I'm thinking the best bet is to hit up Crazy Rays and see if one of the imprezas or legacies with rear discs has non-fucked-up wheel bearings. If we can pull the entire knuckle off of something it'll probably be less of a PITA overall than having to drive bearings out, and will probably be cheaper. Plus, disc brakes. :dunno:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t144728-diy-drum-disc-brake-conversion.html?highlight=Drum+Disc+swap">http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t144728 ... +Disc+swap</a><!-- m -->

I went ahead and ordered a valve cover gasket set, oil filler neck gasket, oil pan gasket, oil change kit and three cans of Gunk. Taylor and I both have some trans fluid lying around. I also got three cans of engine degreasing gel.

We'll have to do a trip to Advance when we start working on it to get parts for our ghetto exhaust fix and probably some ancillary stuff like trans/diff crush washers, brake fluid, etc.

Could one of you Subaru experts be a pal and point me in the direction of the correct shifter bushing repair kit to buy?

throw in some new gearbox fluid. old fluid kills the center diff (which you're going to be working hard in the dirt) and i'm sure its been a looong time since that thing has seen fresh fluid.

use this, its OEM subaru "HP-GO" or high performance gear oil. its not synthetic but its fine for a car like this. ~3 qts for the gearbox, ~1 for the rear diff which you can do "while you're in there", so just get 4 bottles. change it every 25k miles.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://turninconcepts.com/early-impreza-holy-shift-set.html">http://turninconcepts.com/early-impreza ... t-set.html</a><!-- m -->

i would recommend the the first 2 for now unless you're after a shifter that is way too good for this old thing. those bushings will clean up probably 80% of the slop.

TurnIn is one of my favorites. Call them if you have questions, they'll put you right.

if you need other bushings, Oakos is also a great vendor and carries the same parts as well as others and some other brands if you need options.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.oakos.com/1215.htm">https://www.oakos.com/1215.htm</a><!-- m -->

just remember you can search for many suspension/driveline parts under "2002 WRX" since subaru loves to reuse chassis parts across model years and even chassis models. obviously many things did change from 97 to 2002, but a lot of the core mechanicals are similar or the exact same.

do this if you can. be careful though, i don't think you can use the rear discs from an H6 legacy or outback with your tiny 15 inch steelies. shame because that is the budget big brake upgrade for these cars.

Is that fancy gear oil really necessary? We're talking less than 1000 miles a year on this pile. I see the price is the same, but we have some laying around already.

i didn't know if you plan to drive it on the street much so i erred on the side of more miles/use.

you should change the trans fluid regardless, just use something half decent. i tried cheap house-brand fluid one time and it foamed up like crazy and made my gearbox sound terrible for a while.

I have several unopened quarts (granted they're like 5 years old) of Redline 7W-90. You think that'll work well enough for this thing?

Thanks for the links for the shifter bushings, I'm going to pull the trigger on those.

Good tip on avoiding the 6-cylinder Leggies. It looks like the Mt. Airy locations has 6+ potential candidates to pull parts off of.
