Ha.. good luck. We had entry fees covered, a cheap ass car, and our own truck and trailers and it still cost $1000 per person to run chump.
Not saying it's not possible, but how do you determine wrench time vs drive time? Money vs drive time?
An autox car isn't a bad idea. Keep it "street legal" and aim for a wide open ruleset so you guys can have some fun without worrying about what's illegal in class. What is "street legal" to get to Verona can be very loose.
If a wheel falls off, who cares it's autox. You also need 2-3 alumni actively involved in the project with pockets and time to keep the project on the rails.

instead of looking at a track car, how about consider a rally-x car? you can drive something almost stock and still win if you're good, the speeds are low, it teaches excellent car control basics on any driveline and there are events all over the DC/VA/MD/NC region. you can show up with something that would never, ever pass inspection to get on track and still have a great time for relatively cheap entry. a set of brake pads could last years, tires can be a cheap set of winters on summer closeout. if its RWD, just weld the diff. blown shocks, who cares.
its not wheel to wheel, but its fun as shit and i've literally seen everything run, from a roll-over salvaged SUV to a mustang BOSS 302 laguna-seca edition.

Yeah Kristin Goodwin used to run laydown karts with Woodbridge Kart Club, but you're right. I certainly would be leery of running a sprint kart on Shenandoah or Main. Someone was killed when they collided with a deer a few years back. For sprint karts I'd wanna stick to kart tracks.
A RallyX car could be a street legal beater that could be pretty fun and speeds are a lot lower. Certainly a viable option.

I'm already trying my best to round up everyone for arrive and drive kart events and finding time to get myself to them. A friend and I were thinking about buying our own kart next year and doing a league, but we want to get at least half way competent at arrive and drives before we do that haha.

I see the fun, but in reality for a bunch of broke college kids, this isn't the answer. In addition to being currently in the process of building a new race car myself, I've spent the last couple months talking/planning a Chump car build with a group of friends.
Roll cage ($3000+), halo seat ($1000+), belts, window net, etc. before the car touches the track. This doesn't account for the additional $$ you need to service the car and make it reliable.
Also don't forget everyone is going to need safety gear (fire suit, helmet, gloves, shoes hans, etc.....) $1.5-2k each
Plus the running costs for each event (entry, tires, fuel, transport), I think we figured out that after we funded the build ($8kish all in), we would each need to come up with around $600 per event to drive. All this for a "$500" car.
Everyone thinks that it is a great idea until it's time to write the check. Money that you will never see again.
However, I think an autocross car is a great idea. Find some beater Miata/E30/Civic, whatever, get one over 25 years old so you can put vintage tags on it, and mod it however you want. Race each other and have a blast. When it blows up, find another.

More drivers helps the cost but then destroys the advantage of seat time. And wait till you have to sit there for 24 hours hoping not to blow it up early yourself... and watch your teammates hopefully not either.
Chump is on the decline now that people realize it's just as expensive to run a nice car than a POS

That is the realization I came to very quickly during our planning process. I get it though, it would be a blast to do with a group of friends, but when money is involved, things can get difficult.

I need to follow-up with them again. I drove over to he track last time we were out there spectating (Fall Finale) and it's empty, no barriers, tire walls or anything left. It seemed like such a waste and I'd love to get a kart for the boys and I be able to go over an have some fun. I asked if it was possible for someone to just rent it and they asked if I was part of the Woodbridge kart club. (Which I hate - answer my question, if it depends on that, let me know how it works either way...)
I mean, pretty sure I know the answer, same as everything else these days "Due to insurance, we regrettably..."

Sorry Taylor but we've done this before like everything else. Dan and I had the same idea and identical thread a few years back.
The club is just that. A club. It's not a legal entity. It can't own property. For all of the reasons above this is a bad idea. It's just not feasible. Who will own it? If someone gets hurt in and/or on the car who is going to assume liability? Not to mention the fact that it would cost you thousands of dollars to prepare a track car as others have stated and thousands in personal safety equipment.
