TUNE! Also, for whatever it's worth, I did notice a bump in MPGeees after the GTI had the APR tune done as well.

set aside some money for the HPFP and complete fuel system replacement

Only if you manage to put gas in the tank.

That is one of numerous causes, but the pumps are known to grenade even without a misfueling. A lot of enthusiasts recommend putting in some sort of additive to make up for the crap Diesel we have over here.
I was really interested in these, but done with cars that could and likely would bend me over and have there way with me.
When/If the pump grenades, they have to replace and/or flush the entire fuel system, cause it sends metal flakes/shards throughout the entire fuel system, from tank to injector.
Here is a pretty good thread on the issue: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.ph ... 1&page=140
Im not saying it is definitely going to happen, cause some folks get 200k out of their TDIs, I am just saying be prepared.
VW did an extended warranty on the HPFP, but i dont know how long it goes for.

Already have seen people talking about that issue..extended warranty goes to 120k I believe, which I am out of.

Just did a little reading at work on HPFP issue. Seems like theres a guy that makes a kit that basically puts an inline filter everywhere to keep the problem contained to the fuel pump only. I sent him a PM to see how much it is. Might be cheap insurance. After browsing the thread on the failures on tdiclub, it seems like most failures are to cars with <30k miles on them. I only saw one failure for a car with around 150k in the 10 mins or so I spent looking. Kind of leads me to believe it's one of those things that's either going to fail, or isn't, and if it hasn't by now might be OK. THe general recommendation seemed to be maybe it's a good thing to replace if you do timing belt since it's required to remove the TB anyway.

Yeah I remember reading about those kits, seems like it might be good insurance.
By the way I have an unopened box with the MKV "subframe shim kit" that fixes the clunking noise by the dead pedal when turning the wheel while stopped. I obviously never got around to installing them so if your car is doing it and you want 'em, they're yours. (I'm assuming the sportwagen and GTI are the same in that area, I can't imagine why they wouldn't be)

Yikes. Guy is sold out of those HPFP filter kits until sometime in september. Also they are $490....this makes me wonder is he capitalizing on small percentage causing hysteria??

Or $500 in insurance for a $6k repair if not covered by VW
Replaced the exhaust pressure flap. Part was like 170$ on ebay, looked brand new. Still have a check engine light on. Thought maybe fixing that would clear it, but maybe it has to be manually reset? Or maybe I have something else going on - havent had codes re-pulled.
Some other weird eletronic wonky-ness - I caught the trip odometer resetting itself to 0.0 every once in a while without me pressing the button. Stuck switch maybe, not sure.
Found out with all this rain I have a leak somewhere. The water drips right onto my gas pedal foot, so that's been fun. Trying to decide whether to deal with it, or let it ride. People talk about sunroof drains being clogged - guess that could be the case but I dont see any of the pillars or headliner getting wet ..some guy on a forum posted this vague thing "Went to the dealer and found a lead in the windshield at the bottom that leaked into the floor. Repaired under warrany. They said it was the first in a Jetta." so maybe i'll look around once it dries up a bit.

That's just part of the German game. Maybe once every couple of months the radio on my 135i sets itself to 87.7 when I turn it on.

nah, its definitely sporadic..i saw it happen one time. Also, in the MFD I went in and changed it to unlock the doors when you park because it was previously set to only unlock driver door which is annoying. Now, when I take off from a slow speed, the doors lock/unlock two or three times. I could see where the logic must've been hard for those german programmers.

Sorry you've been having so many issues with it. Aside from the throttle body wiring recall I had to have done on it, my MKV only had some really minor quirks like the gas cap light coming on when the cap was tight or the trans dropping into failsafe mode for apparently no reason once or twice. Both went away with a restart.

Yeah - im not too worried about it. I bought a beater expecting to have quirks and that's basically what I got. It's more amusing than anything. I will probably at least track down the water leak though. Right after I bought it I put in rubber mats and its not enough to overflow those so I'm not too worried about that other than it dripping on my foot.

I wonder if it's related to your other wonky issues like the doors locking/unlocking.
When I stupidly drove the E36 through an automated car wash a few years ago trying to get all the salt off of it, it somehow blew water up behind the glovebox where the aftermarket alarm was and fried the shit out of it. It made the car possessed, locking/unlocking frantically and randomly deciding not to start.
