DO NOT BUY iDRIVE. Drove one at work the other day and couldn't figure out how to change the radio station. It's so immensely confusing.

I'm sure you could eventually catch the hang of iDrive. I mean driving stick shift didn't happen overnight.

iDrive isn't that bad. The older iDrive OS's were worse. Just takes time to adjust to it.
That said, I think you're nuts for "stretching the budget" to accommodate a 550i and thinking it's a good idea. Remember how much they sold for brand-new. Then consider if you can afford the maintenance on that sort of scale. There's a reason we keep recommending the I6 BMWs, less complexity throughout the car.

But why would you want to? It takes like 3 menus And 7 options to raise or lower the volume.
Granted, I'm pretty sure Ive only played with the original idrive system

I was reading mixed results of this on the forums actually. I wasnt originally looking for v8s but some forum people were saying some of the 3.0 6's had their own issues too..6 in one..half dozen..
edit: mainly, i was trying to stay out of the 3-series. Ive ridden in a bunch, and they are literally too small for me. I carry around a bunch of guitars and shit, people to lunch, etc etc. I hate getting in and out of them.

Hrmm maybe on the GTI but I don't know. Typically dont go for the hatch look. Also would have to do research to see the right years for the least amount of electrical gremlins and shit?
As for power amount, the malibu has 180hp, and a shitty 4 speed auto. Most of it being the transmission, but it feels like it takes way too much effort out when I pull the mountain i drive over every day at 65ish mph. So lets say 200+

I say you go for the e39 530i M sport package in sterling gray.

The answer you seek is none.
No year VW will be electrically reliable and not retardedly complicated.

Not sure if you are sold on the German cars for a daily so here are some Jap options. How about an IS300 like Rex's? If a 3 series is too small for you then the IS3 might be too though. You can't get more reliable than that car and it was actually a very fun car to drive...and I had the auto. 4 doors, 200hp but decent gearing (3rd gear omgz).
Another option is a 2004-2005 TL. I just did a search on Autotrader and there are 111 in a 200 mile radius of Purcellville in your price range all with around 100k miles. That car will be plenty big for you, good looking, very nice comfortable interior, 270hp, fun car to drive, decent gas mileage, 4 doors. The only thing you want to watch on the older auto versions is the pressure sensor switches in the transmission can go bad and bork the transmission. I replaced a few of them in my old 07 TL-S just as preventative maintenance and I think they were like $40 each.

Don't buy a VW. The only way I'll buy another VW is if I buy it new(ish) and sell it at 59,500 miles. Don't buy a 550i if you don't want to also drop a ton on repairs. What about a Leggy GT? MazdaSpeed6? I like the TL option too.
