The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
Well, some minor updates to the car so far, still trying to source parts for the door repair and suspension refresh. In the mean time I've cleaned/oiled the wood shift knob (baby wipes...is there anything they can't do?)
Before
After
Refreshed the front grilles
And the best part so far...FRONT BUMPER DELETE!
Found a guy here that has a 71 and just got a IE front air dam, he'll let me test fit it on my car before I order, but pretty sure that's the route I'm going to go.
Stay tuned...
Love seeing this car live on. Never has a front plate been so offensive on a vehicle though. I can't believe so many of you guys put up with that nazi state.

I was having a kind of yuck day but this thread has turned that around.
You should just drill and tap a peice of threaded rod into the side of that shifter to hold it in place, that was on my to-do list. :dunno:

throw some waterlox on that shift knob and it would look amazing

i ran with out a front plate on the audi the entire time i owned in in ny and va, and the only reason i have it on the '02 is because it's a load-bearing plate holding a piece of rusted out front end in place (and covering the hole at the same time)
once the front air dam is in place, the plate is gone again. (fairly easy to fly under the radar in a college town with a lot of out of out of state plates)

so while there's still plenty to sort out, the alternator took an unexpected jump to first in the list. the mounting tab had been "modified" at some point in it's life, and/or broke. notice how you can see the entire bolt and the washers to keep it pinched in place. long story short, it kept slipping off the bolt and running on the battery.
it was a gm in there, so figured i'd replace it with the same since the bosch was almost $100 more.
existing tab had been cut down a good amount, which is i guess why the washers were in there.
figured it should be a quick in-and-out job, i'll spare you all of the stupid details, but so many factors prevented this from going smoothly. eventually got it sorted and it's hooked back up.
have some parts coming from a donor car later this week, so hopefully i'll have more progress.
hock: wow that is ghetto even for a car I had!
I actually replaced that bolt and the various washers because the old bolt was too small and unless it was super tight the alternator could move around. But the whole mounting sleeve just went away? Damn, I guess I didn't fix it as much as I had hoped.
I guess you were able to find the parts it's actually supposed to have to make the new alternator fit right?

haha, no worries, i blame everything that's odd on the people you bought it from.
it actually didn't take any new parts, i could have probably used a shorter bolt so it didn't stick near the belt as much, but put some washers on the front of it and called it a day.
the new alt fits real snug in the mounting bracket, so hoping all will be good. guy at napa said if it crack the tab again just bring it back and they'll give me a new one as it would 'clearly be a defect with the alternator.'

some minor updates
gas gauge no worky - replaced tank sending unit with another that's in one piece.
and now i don't have to math to not run out of gas!
In the middle of trying to fix the horn I decided to check out why the cluster lights were dead. Replaced bulbs in cluster in case it was one of those 'if one goes out they all do' kind of things. no luck. Another forum suggested the dimmer switch could be suspect....I'm no expert, but this didn't look right. Sourced a replacement but still not lighting them up. Did notice the #2 fuse had popped, and blows as soon as the lights are turned on. feels like a bad ground somewhere, so maybe i'll get lucky and track it down one day.
On the plus side I don't have any new lights out, so i'm counting it as a semi-win.
also was able to replace the driver seat belt which wouldn't retract with a moderately better one, and the passenger side which the seat crushes if you're not careful.
