I'm trying to talk the wife into it, but she's worried it's too dark and depressing... which seems to be a theme with shows these days.
I'm only 1 episode in, but can confirm it is dark and depressing. There is a scene with the town's people all watching the fire from a bridge (obviously not far enough away to be safe) and kids are making snow angels in the ash on the ground. A mother and father are pushing a baby in a stroller watching the glow...my kid hasn't even arrived yet and it hit me in the feels.

Okay, so that's a no go for her. Pretty much everything involving kids upsets her since we've had one. There was a scene in Jack Ryan involving the terrorists wife and kid that pretty much turned her off that show. I guess I'll add it to ever-growing list of shows I need to find time to watch alone... like finishing Mr Robot season 3. Good thing I've got all this free time on my hands.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
if it does any service to the actual event, there's no happy ending other than they contained it in the end and saved the world at large from fallout. people near the site died in horrific ways from the most intense radiation poisoning in history. i'm not sure they're trying to sugarcoat that.

Well, the fact that he is part Targaryen may have been the reason the dragon incinerated the iron throne instead of Jon.

yeah but...so what? "Dragon is really angry at a chair instead of a human" has literally no bearing on the story.
I mean, could have had Drogon try and roast Jon only for for him to be unburt by the flames, then have the dragon melt the iron throne in frustration.
As it stands, it was just...a weird non-sequitur. You know, like the rest of the season.

I assumed Drogor understood Jon realized the iron throne was the true enemy of man. It corrupted so many, including Dany. After all, pretty much everything bad that happened was in pursuit of said throne.

Okay, fine. Jon dragon whispered his scaly ass and told him to melt the throne.
My wife wanted there to be dragon eggs hidden in the throne. I was kinda sad that didn't come true.

I can get the symbolism of Drogon melting down the Iron Throne, but how the hell would he know what that is? Did Daenerys describe it in detail to him when she was telling him bedtime stories? Did she draw pictures of it and tell him all about how that's what she wanted? Was it the only chair left in King's Landing after he burnt the fuck out of everything else?
There was a fairly consistent theme of everyone who seriously pursued the iron throne making disastrous moral compromises. With Daenerys they just didn't fully bake her turn to homicidal megalomania. Either way, Drogon melting down the throne seemed a little hackneyed.

I am definitely hooked on Chernobyl after the second episode. There is a 5ish minute scene where they evacuated the town directly next to Chernobyl and there isn't a single word of dialogue. It was so perfectly well done with the music and different evacuation scenes. HBO continues to kill it with cinematography and scoring.

Got around to watching this as well - so good. Can't wait to watch final episode tonight.
Caused me to google and research way more about Chernobyl than i ever thought i would. Series is surprisingly accurate, obviously some parts kicked up a notch for drama, but overall pretty solid. I had no idea the scale of the whole thing.

I have been doing the same. Had dinner with my parents the other night and got to talking about it as my dad is also watching it. He has worked in the energy sector for 30+ years as a contractor with most of his funding coming from USAID. He has worked everywhere from Ukraine to Afghanistan to Kenya helping to develop power grids, plants, and sharing of energy between countries.
He casually brought up that in 1992 he was about an hour from going to Chernobyl with a group of delegates from the State Department. They were working for a week somewhere in Russia (I forget where) and the head of their group insisted he go and survey Chernobyl at the direction of the State Department. The Russians insisted this was not possible and they would not allow it. For the entire week, this guy pushed and pushed until finally the Russians said okay and set up the trip. They were going to allow them into Pripyat (exclusion zone), but not to the actual reator site. Morning of the head guy is a no show so they have the hotel unlock his room and he is sitting on the bed crying, scared for his life. He couldn't bring himself to go. I'm pretty happy how that story turned out.
