Stock Market Thread
I bought a bunch of their stock at under $20 a couple years ago. I guess I missed my window to take profits. Almost sold earlier this year at $290. oh well.

Streaming is the future but they went all in on the streaming-only too quickly IMO. Streaming is still in the realm of early adopters, and a lot more people have dvd players than netflix streamers and broadband connections. Probably a bit of an overreaction due to their stock price.
and why throw away the netflix branding for the dvd service? that makes no sense to me.

Amazon's streaming content is far worse according to my perusal of it a couple of months back.

Most prices are set by the publishers.

...and the reason the Netflix/Starz deal fell through is because Starz wanted to be on a tiered membership. In other words, control the price of their content. Who do you think is gonna win that battle? As long as there is another way for the media companies to distribute content to the masses, they are able to charge distributors out the ass for streaming. Why would Starz (et al) make a deal when then can still push via cable, satellite, premium movie channels and disc? It's simple supply and demand. They have to pay to play and that cost differentiation WILL be passed on to the customer eventually.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I think my perceptions are skewed here, because I'll never buy in for any of the stuff that you listed.

...and until a good portion of the market is like you, they don't have to sell content to the likes of Netflix.

In the end, Netflix is gets fucked. I hope it doesn't happen 'cause I'd like to see them succeed, but the content isn't there yet.

Well I'm calling it. If the whole market is 3-4% down today, and NFLX isn't, then it's near bottom. Buy! (I don't have any money to put in the same location as my mouth)

Do you think Netflix felt pressure from the possible competitors to focus on the streaming only model? Given the amount of cash the competitors do have, Netflix may have felt like they needed to move now. In terms of delivering content streaming is obviously the near future and separating the more costly snail mail segment allows them to control prices a little better. Plus I think if the USPS gets its way, the one or two day turn around on DVD by mail could be 3-5 day turnaround. Not gonna work with a Redbox on every corner. Maybe they see the writing on the wall and would rather have some lesser known brand fail in the wake of these changes and not tarnish the Netflix brand along the way.

Content is great if you are 4-12 years old, where else can you get a babysitter for all day Sat and Sun for under $10 a month?

I don't have much to contribute here other than the fact that I think hard copy media will go away almost altogether in the not so distant future. For a business like that, I think it makes sense to invest more in the online streaming capabilities of movies and entertainment...just like downloading MP3s became the norm vs. buying CDs, Kindles / Nooks vs. paper books.

Although it was a confusing move to consumers, what Netflix did from a business analyst perspective was pretty smart. You could get into it about stupid names for their services, etc. But that is a gutsy move to make as the CEO of a company. Like Steve said, if people still want to rent a DVD or Blu Ray they can find a Redbox within a 2 mile radius in most cities (I have 4 redboxes within a 5 minute drive)...but mobile / home digital streaming is going to be the way of the future.
