Who knew that the bad guy from Blade and an E-cig commercial was such a damn fine actor?  I sure as hell didn't.  The trailers had me all "holy shit Mahershala Ali and.....that...guy..." and honestly I think Stephen Dorff is doing a better job much of the time.

The scene a couple episodes ago of them in old age on Roland's deck had me all up in my feels, man.

This show is really hitting it's stride and feeling really really close to S1. Rex and I talked about the scene on the deck a couple of weeks ago. The acting was phenomenal - the range of emotions displayed by both characters made you really feel what they were portraying. I am so sad there is only one episode left, but I have a feeling it's going to be a doozy.

that and honestly i think the whole supporting cast has been great and fleshes out the way that town feels. that was one of the reasons i just couldn't get into S2...it felt like a collection of people more than a community of them.

Indeed. Absolutely perfect.

I also really enjoyed watching both seasons of The Dragon Prince on Netflix with my family. Cool art style, fun writing, I loved it.

Loved the TD finale. The memory loss in Julie's driveway & then Wayne's son finding the address was a great little rollercoaster at the end. Also, Roland's rant about ugly people at the bar was some of the most enjoyable bits of acting I've seen in a long time. Mah hart was touched when the dog came up to him after that. I was hoping they'd show us the genesis of keeping strays. "I thought you hated dogs?"..."Motherfucker, my best friend is a dog"

I'm a little confused about the remorse Wayne & Roland felt for Harris James. Killing the knowledge & secret he held, sure, but not the man himself - especially since he murdered Julie's father whom Roland cared for. His ghost figure was the only one Wayne reached out to say sorry to. I think that was a little played up, and if it was more about killing the lead & not the man I think that could've been a bit clearer (Roland did have one outburst about that).

What do you think Wayne's emotional/thought process was at the very end? He had a very concerned look on his face (the kids riding by, I get being concerned for them) but then had a positive memory of patching things up with his wife, then a dark glimpse of 'Nam. Curious to read your thoughts.

Did I miss the part about remorse for Harris and Wayne apologizing to his ghost? I remember him apologizing to Roland fitting l for putting him in the situation.

I didn't really get the meaning of Wayne fading off into the jungle of Vietnam. Curious to hear others interpretations. All I got was that he was fading off deeper into Alzheimer's.

Yeah, he was mixed in with the Vietnamese soldiers in Wayne's study when the ghosts came creeping in

Wayne put his hand on his shoulder & said "I'm sorry" to him.

Some interesting takes from The AV Club comments

Quote:I took it as showing his future... as time passes and his Alzheimer/dementia progresses, it becomes in effect a jungle in which he gets lost...

Quote:I viewed it as Hays eventually disappearing into the nothingness of his fading memories and time, just like him slipping silently into the jungle like he was never there.

And finally, I think this one nails it

Quote:We zoom into his eye on the porch because it’s his last thoughts within the context of this “story” he’s been a part of all season. The end of Wayne’s arc isn’t that he finds Julie, it’s that he finds her and doesn’t pursue it (the look in his eye as he drank the water - he remembered her for at least a second), decides to stop telling the story and takes himself out of it. We’ve been leading this way for a few episodes now - in 7 he even tells Eliza “this story’s over for me, miss” though of course at that point he’s lying. The central idea of this season is the stories we tell ourselves and others - Wayne tells himself this conspiracy story to give something to solve, the nuns tell the story of the HIV to protect Julie, etc. etc.

So where would Wayne Hays choose to end his story? He’d like to end it on what we could assume is his best memory, he and Amelia walking out of the dark bar into the light together, still with a whole potential future ahead of them. But it doesn’t always work like that, because some part of him is still in that Vietnam jungle. You can trace it all back there - his need to be withholding which unintentionally rubbed off on his children, his tunnel vision with regards to tracking someone who’s gone missing at the expense of his family and career, the way he lashes out when people get too close to him, whether it’s Roland sticking his neck out for him in ‘80 or all the times he pushed Amelia away. This whole season Wayne was stuck in the jungle, and if you like you can interpret that as a grim way to end, but I think the fact that he’s finally actually seeing that is him coming to terms with the life’s he’s had and maybe moving past it.

a lot of excellent thoughts but wanted to add that my take on the jungle ending scene was similar. if you look at his eyes right before he ducks back into the foliage...they're scared eyes. wide open and unsure as he looks back over his shoulder, where he came from. he knows this is the start of another decent into a place where he might not be able to see the trail that leads him out again.

its not as much a sad ending for me as much as tragic and cruel. Waynes's got his family and come to terms with his demons. he recognized Julie for an instant, vindicating his efforts, and repaired his friendship with Roland. i think that last scene in the bar was just a blunt existential moment where that memory was his final salvation to know he found the last critical piece of his life's story before accepting the inevitable slide into further memory loss.

definitely my #2 favorite series, #1 is still the gold standard for now. just creepier, felt more consistently urgent in story pacing and i liked Harrelson and McConnaghey's acting chemistry better. but both totally satisfying to watch. i hope this is a big boost to both Ali and especially Dorff's careers, they deserve it. i also think i'm ready for a season that isn't based on "kids being murdered/molested by weird backwater cults"

That moment when his eyes tuned in while drinking the water was chilling. I knew right then that he remembered what was going on and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see if he was going to say something or leave it alone. The fact he gave his son the address solidified to me that he remembered. I think he wants his son to research the address so that the reporter chick will realize Julie is still alive, but Wayne is done, he got his closure.

Another moment that seemed to tie things together was Wayne was in the car with his son telling him that he needs to finish solving this case, its part of his life and who he is and he has to find the missing pieces. That was big.

A lot of scenes seemed to lead me on to feel like something more was going to happen but nothing did. Take for example when Roland asked if he could stay with him a couple days a week, the music was super ominous and I thought it was either a hallucination or Wayne was going to harm himself but nothing.

I'm pretty onboard with the thoughts that he didn't pursue anything further with Julie because he got his case solved and closure. Minutes earlier Roland asked Wayne if he feels closure and he didn't (me neither, dammit that was a pretty lame way to find out what happened) but finding Julie sealed it and he knew her life was good. Wayne was also able to find the end to another broken thing his entire life, it was fixed. The flashback with his wife and marriage was another moment of "fixing" but also when he walked out with her into the light followed by the jungle scene tells me that was the end. His memory is gone now but he's with his wife who also helped him solve the case and he has his entire family plus Roland. Boy, what a good season.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE how they did a shout out to season 1 while having it not be relevant to the case at all. It threw me for a loop, I started trying to make connections to how it may have been tied together with Hoyt but didn't pan out in the end.

I don't have much to say about it but Roland's role, story and character is top notch.

Was anyone else just a little annoyed with the way Wayne's wife spoke? It got annoying to me after a few episodes.

All the scenes with the father of the kids were excellent. Acting was on point. So good.

I'm just glad they saved this shit after season 2. *chanting*SEASON 4*chanting

Has anyone watched The Masked Singer? It actually turned out to be really really good.
