XDS and M&P Shield are good options.

I have a Shield, Shield is pretty much easy button when " what gun should I buy? " comes up

+1 on the Shield, mine is in .40 and it's a little beast. Can't go wrong with an XDS as well, I own the "big brother" XDM and it's a great weapon

For CCW, Shield all the way.

I'll throw another wrench in the Shield barrage, but I'm a big fan of my Ruger LC9S Pro. I did multiple rental comparos between it, the Glock 43 and the Shield 9 and the Ruger came away as the most comfortable for my hands and the best trigger of the group. It's a longer travel, but crisp break and reset and feels great. +1 to FF'ing/renting a slew of different ones to see what fits you best, and +1 to not buying a small single stack as your first pistol, which leads me to...another strong recommendation for a Glock 19. It's the Honda Civic of the pistol world and is in the perfect medium between home defense/range practice/conceal carry purposes. I love mine - especially after finding out that I can conceal it easily (with a large Surefire X300 light) if i choose on my small frame/waist with the right gear (Raven Vanguard 3).

I don't know where else to put this, but tell me what you know about dressing knives. I carry a leatherman on my person every day and I keep a hatchet in my emergency kit, but I think I have a gap with no significant knife in my kit. I gotta think my primary use case is field dressing, but I'm open to suggestions.

I carry a Kershaw Tanto Bravo with me all day every day. I've carried this same knife for 8 years and it still holds a good edge. Serrations are handy for cutting, drop point is good for puncturing, tacky grip is great for wet/slick conditions and spring assisted opening is great when your other hand is in use.



I also keep a Gerber LMF II in my bag. It's sharp, durable, strong, and multi-use. Can break a window with the end of the handle, pull it out and cut a seatbelt, or use the blade to hammer on and make kindling for a fire. I haven't really pushed it to its limits, but I haven't found much it won't do.



I also keep a Ka-Bar Last Ditch Knife either around my neck or laced up in my boot at work. It's small, easy to hide, easily accessible and razor sharp.

As far as an edc, I carry my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 everywhere I go. I've put it through two summers of living in the woods, completely abusing it and I've only had to sharpen it twice.

Definitely solidified my love for Spyderco, especially the para. You can find them used for a decent price, usually ~$70. Not sure if it would meet your needs for a dressing knife though

Yay Christmas Guns. Picked up a Kahr CM9. It's a tad bit wider than my G43 but a good bit shorter so I'll use this Kahr as a pocket pistol for short trips. Trigger pull is long but very firm, crisp and consistent. I really like it.

These are the three I've narrowed it down too.

The SOG is supposedly great for dressing, but I like the lashing holes on Gerber. The Benchmade... well... that's just a fanboi pic cause I bought a folding knife of theirs like 15 years ago and still have it (which is my current outdoors knife, but not big enough).

I don't personally care for serrated blades, they make sharpening more difficult and have limited utility in my mind. Ultimately up to you, but I think the plain blade will serve you better dressing and batoning.

Zach Gordon took me shooting over the weekend. I'm too poor to afford this shit AND cars, so some day in the future I will have more to contribute to this thread lol. But for now, it's as fun as I expected it to be, I didn't hit the target once (but his sights needed fixing and he left some tool or the other at home) and I want to make a deer sorry he came across my path.
