Project Shaguar XFR
So my car has been flawless until I actually had to use it this morning to drive to a client meeting. Very odd, it was jerking back and forth at partial throttle, especially at low speeds, unless I used manual gear selecting mode. It threw a CEL on the way home. Any guesses as to what it will be? I find out at my service appointment tomorrow.

Jag tech on the forum's response:
Based on your description, it appears to be a misfire due to a failing or failed coil unit(s) that may be caused by engine oil seeping into the spark plug well.

Under no circumstances operate the vehicle if the MIL if flashing as damage to the catalytic converter(s) is occurring.

Sounds like a misfire but I have no idea why it would only happen in drive and not manu-matic mode? With my VW/BMW history I have blow many ignition coils over the years and its never mattered which gear its in, just throttle load and RPM.

Manual select mode keeping the RPMs up higher smoothing it out? Subarus and some of the Mitsubishi engines Chrysler used had a similar problem with the O rings below the coil packs failing and letting oil from the valve covers down in.

The tech Chris seems pretty bullish on it after I dropped it off. There is an ECU mapping update he said that has fixed some of them but also said that it could be carbon fouling already. This was also suggested by a Jag tech on the forums so I am curious to see what it ends up as.

if it is carbon....provided its not so far gone you have to pull the heads, I would start putting BG44K in your tank at intervals. great de-carboner for port injected stuff.

It's direct injected so this stuff wouldn't work. Direct injection is the reason newer motors have problems with carbon buildup on the intake valves.

The tech did mention they have a new treatment they are using in the intake that is basically like seafoam. But yeah I won't know what it is for sure until I get a call back from them.

Got the call, borked MAF sensor. Covered under warranty no big deal. Interesting it would go so soon, I'll see if they have any more details in the morning.

MAF's are so weird, I had a Ranger leave me sit one time because a piece of a dead bug got stuck on the MAF.

Glad they figured it out... I agree with Jeff on the MAFs-are-weird comment. In general MAFs seem incredibly touchy. Weird to me that it only hiccup'd in automatic mode and not manumatic.

Code was P0101 Mass Air Flow Sensor Fault. Car runs and pulls like a raped ape, better than I ever remember it ha. It never felt super "off" but lately it was a little hesitant on power delivery and that makes more sense. I just assumed the ECU was adjusting to the x-pipe. Would have been a $425 fix out of warranty, instead it cost me $16 for sales tax. Extended warranty literally kicked in 3 days ago and first incident has already paid for almost 1/4 of it. Have that transferable until 2019 or 100,000 miles Smile

For all the tempermental-ness and black magic that seems to surround MAFs I've never actually had a failure. I think I had to do some soldering fix on the Miata's AFM to get it to run properly, but all my other cars have been fine. I do like to hose them down with MAF cleaner whenever I take an intake apart, maybe that helps.

Seriously, L-Jetronic came out in, what? 1974? MAF and MAP aren't like, descendants, just two ways of solving a problem.

My Scirocco had a side draft carb conversion... and no MAF or MAP.

I'm about to jinx myself... but none of my Honda turds and their hundreds of thousands of miles had a MAP issue (because they don't have MAF). :dunno:

now back to fixing the Shaguar!
