inherited our first last week while we were home. Winchester Model 62"A" w/a JC Higgens Rifleman 4X scope, it was given to my FIL when he was 13 and its been extremely well cared for and original. he's in his 70's now and he's decided its time to start passing some things on to the next generation, but nobody else in the family is into firearms. we were more than happy to give it a home. i've fired it before during a few holiday stays and its just super satisfying to put holes in tuna cans and solo cups with. it will be a perfect learning tool and a good introduction to gun ownership in general.

it was really neat hearing him tell us stories about growing up in Roanoke and how different times were back in the 50's. 13 year old kid, told to get out of the house and be home for dinner, so he'd take his .22 and the dog and go roam the mountain ridges all day looking for stuff to plink. nobody gave a damn, that was just normal. i'm super excited to start shooting it but just to know the history of it really brings it alive and makes us feel more like "stewards" of a relic that has its own personality, than simply owners of a tool. if our son is willing and life allows it we'll hopefully pass it on to him someday, a long time from now, if i can pry it out of my wife's hands.

Gorgeous gun, I love stuff with a story too. My mom has a cheapo single-shot .22 she got for varmit control purposes back when they first got the farm, before I was born. We go plink with it for shits 'n' gigs sometimes when I go home.

Uh, everyone? I went shooting for the first time in ages recently and did a field strip when i got home just to soak in the smell of gunpowder and gun oil.

I made another addition to the stable last night for HD purposes.

Unboxing:

The intimidation factor alone here is impressive.

A little self-defense advice from the manufacturer.

And an example of the spray pattern.

Locked and loaded.

The rear sight raises after you cycle the action to indicate a loaded chamber.

The thumb safety defaults on after cycling the action, push it forward and you are weapons hot.

I prowled around the house for half an hour last night but could only find a mosquito clinging to the blinds in the basement and a teensy spider in one of the window sills. The mosquito was completely eviscerated and it also took down most of the spider's web along with him, but I have yet to bag any big game with it.

Haha that thing is crazy!

I used to hunt crickets in our old house on the farm with a blowdart gun. It sounds really hard but believe it or not once you get a feel for it the blowdart gun is pretty freaking accurate!

It was $55 which was initially too steep for me, then Lauren looked over my shoulder, asked if it would kill silverfish and demanded I order it right. now. As DJ would say #happywifehappylife. That being said, I felt like a little kid that just got the bitchinest Nerf gun ever for Christmas last night. I'm already resisting the urge to give it a bad ass military spec paint job.

Lauren got a fly with it this morning and said it took a couple shots to kill it, but I think she probably just needs to work on her aim a little bit. Will report back once I personally find some big game to take down, I'm not sure it's got the firepower to take down a roach with audible footsteps but we'll see.

I have wanted to get one of those forever but could never justify $55. Maybe I'll pitch it to the wife because she absolutely hates bugs.

Okay boys, learn me a home self-defense weapon. I always thought I would pick one up and train for when I had a kid, but a couple of nightmares later of being helpless against intruders with my wife in the house has left me with cold sweats. I am not very educated on firearms but the couple times I have gone shooting I was comfortable

My wife is rightly so nervous about weapons in the house but is trained. Her father was in the army and trained her early on. She has her concealed carry license and in the one competition at work with over 100 people, placed first. I say that to explain she isn't nervous about firing one, but she is incredibly nervous about having it in the house/misuse/being stolen etc so quick-reach safes and safeties are important to get advice on here as well.

1. Penetration with neighbors, we have a firewall and very little shared walls, but I don't want something going through walls too deeply.
2. This is for self-defense only. If someone were to enter the house, I would be posting up in our bedroom. I am NOT "going around the house". The whole point is to keep my family safe, not to go prove myself. Things can be replaced.
3. Availability - I want to be able to go the range, maybe some self-defense training. So it being reliable and not having incredibly expensive ammunition is a plus as I don't plan on the first time shooting it being the time I need it.

Anything else?

Or buy/build an AR (I would go this route, cause you can have fun with it outside of protecting your house)

Those are my recommendations.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I need to do a lot more reading and perhaps consult an attorney on what my rights are, however the AR gives me pause. If I was in a trial for my life for hurting or killing someone; I am not sure I want a rifle associated by the uneducated public as an "assault rifle" and that I was a gun nut.

I guess I can read through, but usually stuff changes over time and this thread is pretty old Wink

Yes on the shotgun, no freaking way with the AR. You do not want to use a high powered rifle for home defense if you are living in a townhome (which it sounds like you are). Frankly I would only use a rifle for home defense if I lived out in the boonies or on a farm.

In our townhome I use an XDM 9mm with critical defense hollow points and my wife uses a Ruger SR-22 with hollow points. While possible one of those rounds could penetrate the firewalls it's not as likely as it would be with my rifle. I've also got the SX-3 but that doesn't leave the safe

Your rights in the state of VA are that you can own an AR.

I'll take my chances in court as a living individual and keep my AR.

That's the thing, guns and recommendations about them don't really change.

9 mm in a safe under the bed or nightstand. done.

556/223 tumble and lose velocity drastically when it impacts a wall. The ballistic tests I have seen show they all (9mm, 12ga 00 and .223) penetrate way more than you think, and surprisingly less so with an AR.

I've seen the data on this too. Its interesting, but don't think for 1 second your handgun won't penetrate a wall and go through. You shop good ammunition and that's really the difference.
