Their motherboards are still pseudo proprietary and although they do give you upgrade options, it's very rarely for system components. Like, they'll give you the option to upgrade the graphics card or processor, but they won't give you the option to select a motherboard with a nice SATA controller. They let you select the parts that people will know they need.
In general, I've had really good luck buying parts and building my own PCs. I haven't done it in... oh.. 2 years, but it's a good option for desktops.
