So, uh, after spending a few days doing some research - it basically boils down to hax0rs intercepting the key request by the software to Microsoft to use in an RSA style scheme. Hax0rs break the level of RSA currently being used, using software to intercept and simulate the response, sent back to the WMA playing software, which thinks it got the right key, and opens the file. Seems simple enough - just a matter of time for someone to break the WMA10 level encryption currently being used, which, I'd suppose is just a matter of time, and may even take a gander at myself. Some japanese hackers supposedly have just finished up the WMV format, but not WMA. Sounds like a challenge - which is why I havent been able to find smething ready-made on the interweb that doesnt involve playing back through the sound card.
